Philadelphia has gone crazy over A.J. Feeley. A general feeling I get from other Iggles fans, is that they are done with McNabb, and want Feeley to remain as the starter. Now most people realize that A.J. Feeley is not the next Tom Brady, but that is not what this is about. The city of Philadelphia hates Donovan McNabb.
During the 2004 season Donovan could have probably run for mayor, and won. The Eagles had a tremendous year, and so did McNabb. They went on to finally get over that NFC Championship game hump, but failed to win Super Bowl 39. In that game Donovan had 3 ints, and a very slow hurry up offense. Since that game the relationship with Five, and fans has soured.
The following year there was the ugly departure of wide receiver Terrell Owens. Many people questioned Donovan’s leadership skills, and blamed him for TO leaving. McNabb would play through the season with a sport hernia, until he re-injured himself in week ten. Mike McMahon finished out that horrible year, and the Birds went 6-10.
In 2006 McNabb started the year on fire. He was putting up great numbers, and was an early MVP candidate. Then he tore the ACL in his right knee, and the legend of Jeff Garcia began. Philadelphia instantly took to Garcia’s grit, and guts. The Eagles won their final 5 games of the regular season, and Garcia was beloved by the fans. Hatred to wards Donovan grew, as people debated which QB were the Eagles better off with.
That is the same debate going on now. I hear it everyday on the radio that A.J. is more accurate, a better leader, gives his receivers a chance, and all kinds of other nonsense.
Lets be real here. People do not want A.J. Feeley, they just want anybody, but McNabb. Fans would likely applaud Doug Pederson at QB right now. That is how bad Philadelphia has turned on Donovan.
The same people who wanted Garcia back, and hated the Feeley move, now think A.J. is the next football god.
Andy Reid has stated numerous times that Donovan is the teams starting QB, but nobody seems to listen. Everything you read is how there is a “QB controversy” in Philly.
It’s not a QB controversy, it is the fans backlash at Donovan for all the failures of this team. At this point I bet Donovan hates playing here. Who wants to play for a bunch of fans who hate him?
The funny thing is, one day when Donovan is actually gone, all these same people will cry how they miss him. Be careful what you wish for Philadelphia. It might come true.
