Wing Bowl 16 Review

With no Super Bowl to look forward to, Philadelphia packed the Wachovia Center to witness the 16th annual “Wing Bowl”.

For those who don’t know Wing Bowl is a competitive eating contest held every Friday of Super Bowl weekend in Philadelphia. A crowd of 25,000 people sit and watch 30 Phat Phucks try to down as many wings as they can in 30 minutes. Whoever eats the most wins a Toyota Truck and other gifts.

Another reason for the big draw for this event is the hundreds of hot scantly dressed “Wingettes” who fetch the contestants more wings and cheer them on.

This years selling point has been the much anticipated match up of last years champion Joey Chestnut, and former Champion Bill “El Wingador” Simmons. Chestnut has been widely considered the best eater in the world after he beat Kobayashi in Nathan’s Hot Dog eating competition. “El Wingador” is the local underdog of the competition. He is sort of like the Rocky of Wing Bowl.

After all the pre-hype and fancy introductions, the gluttony began.

As predicted by many, Joey Chestnut came away victorious again, as he eat an amazing 241 Wings. After stuffing his face with pounds of chicken wings you would think Chestnut needed some Tums? Incredibly he didn’t need anything.

“I feel great, believe it or not,” said Chestnut. “But this is probably it for me. This is an amazing contest, because you push your body to extreme limits with this, I’ve just figured out ways to stretch my stomach. For the most part, I get into a perfect rhythm like a marathoner. I just continue eating, that why it’s so hard every year to go into this with goals. It’s a big contest and it takes a lot to get ready for, but it also takes a lot out of you. I don’t feel too bad right now.”

Chestnut won’t be alone in his retirement. “El Wingador” looks to be hanging it up as well.

“Hey, I gave it my best shot, but Joey is a great eater,” Simmons said. “He got booed when he came in here today, but Joey is a really good guy. I think the difference I may have made with Wing Bowl is that we put it on the map. To be the best in the world, you have to face the world’s best. Chestnut and Bertoletti are the world’s best. I’m done, I’ve had enough. No more Wing Bowls for me. What I am doing next? I’m not going to Disney World, I’ll tell you that.”

With those two gone what will attract fans for Wing Bowl 17? There may not be any big name eaters next year, but the event is good enough to sell itself. People will come just for the fun of it.

Hopefully people in Philadelphia will be talking about the Eagles being in the Super Bowl this time next year.
