The New England Patriots perfect season was shockingly broken by the New York Giants.
Eli Manning orchestrated an amazing last minute game winning drive to win 17-14 in Super Bowl XLII. That drive was capped off with a 13 yard touch down to wide receiver Plaxico Burress. Burress boldly guaranteed a Giants win before the game, and while he did not have a great game, he stepped up big when it counted.
The main reason for the colossal upset was the play of the Giants defense. They harassed, hit, sacked, and pressured Brady all game long. Brady rarely looked comfortable in the pocket, and his normal pin point accurate passes were extremely erratic. Justin Tuck, Michael Strahan, and Osi Umenyiora played the game of their lives. They made a very good Patriots offensive line look inept. Pats Left Tackle Matt Light had numerous false starts worried about the speed of Osi.
Tom Brady and the arrogant, cheating New England Patriots fell apart in the biggest game of the season. In historical terms this was the biggest game in New England Patriots history. A Pats win would have given them the best season in NFL history, and it would have cemented them as the best team dynasty in NFL history. Somewhere in the world Mercury Morris and the rest of the members of the undefeated 72 Dolphins are celebrating.
New England’s season of perfection ends with a huge blemish on it. The fairy tale dream of being the best ever has just had a horrific ending. The sting of this loss will definitely last a very long time, if not forever. No team had higher expectations than the Pats did, and very few people even gave the Giants a shot to win this game(including me). This was without a doubt the biggest choke job in NFL History.
You have to give a ton of respect to the Giants for pulling this gutty win out, and to Eli Manning who put on his Superman cape and saved the day for New York. The big bad cheating Patriots would not prevail on this day. The Super Bowl is where legends are made, and Eli Manning carved his name in NFL history with that game winning touch down drive on Super Sunday.
The play of the game was on New York’s final drive. After converting a crucial 4th-and-one into a first down, Eli made magic happen. It appeared that the Patriots had Eli for a sack, but he managed to somehow escape the defenders grasp, fire a pass down field, and completed a 32 yard pass to receiver David Tyree(what a catch). Eli was rewarded for his performance by being named the games MVP.
The best thing about this game is that the Patriots cheating ways leave them empty handed at the end of the year. It was not only just a loss, but a hard fought crushing last minute defeat. Pats fans must feel like their hearts just got ran over by a bulldozer. This game brings up the old saying of cheaters never prosper. That lesson could not have been any more true after todays game.
As a Philadelphia Eagles fan it is my job to hate the Giants, but tonight they earned my respect. I can not hate on the outstanding job they did of dethroning the “unbeatable” team. Congratulations to the New York Giants for winning the Super Bowl, and for ruining a dynasty.
