It’s time to put an end to all of these rumors right now. Donovan McNabb is under contract with the Philadelphia Eagles, and will remain an Eagle for all of 2008. He will be under center week 1 in September.
The fact is the Eagles believe they are close to winning a Championship. As crazy as that may sound, it really is not that unthinkable. Look at what the Giants just did. They went from 8-8 to Super Bowl Champs signing no major free agents, and then losing Tiki Barber and Jeremy Shockey along the way. They got hot at the right time, had a few draft picks step up, and rode out a strong defense to victory. Their example proves that no team in the NFL is that far away.
Trading McNabb would completely destroy any playoff hopes. The Eagles like Kevin Kolb, but they know he is not ready. It will take him time to develop into the QB they want, and time is something the Eagles can afford to give Kolb.
While Many teams feel obligated to get their QB on the field, the Eagles see no rush here. They did invest a 2nd round pick on Kolb, but his salary is minimal for NFL standards. With McNabb at the helm they have a luxury that most teams do not. A great veteran to play for now, while their promising rookie learns the offense for the future.
Forget about McNabb going to the Baltimore Ravens. Their General Manager Ozzie Newsome has already snuffed out that rumor. This
rumor lie was of course started by Eagles hater himself Mark Eckle. It’s amazing that guy even has a job.
This won’t be the only bad rumor you hear over the next few months. There are sure to be many other teams rumored to trade for Donovan, like the Miami Dolphins, Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings, Kansas City Chiefs, and the classic McNabb to his home town Chicago Bears.
All of these will be pure speculation by some writer who is bored and needs a story with some juice. When all else fails, I guess it pays to just make something up. As long as you call it a rumor then you never have to be held accountable for it not being true.
When will Donovan McNabb’s days as an Eagle end? That will be up to Donovan McNabb. As long as McNabb avoids any more major injuries, and plays well, he will be a Philadelphia Eagle. His contract runs through 2010, and it is not out of the question that he plays it out until it expires.
While I am sure many Eagles fans are dying to trade McNabb for a big 2nd round pick(so they can draft another Matt McCoy), I know I am not. Good QBs do not grow on trees, and when you find one, you hold on to him until the wheels fall off. When that day comes you have Kolb ready to step in. Until then this is Donovan McNabb’s team making it’s final push for a Super Bowl.
I think many Eagles fans have forgotten all of the great things number Five has done as an Eagle. Sure he has not won multiple Super Bowls, but outside of Tom Brady who has? Here is a little video of some great moments in Donovan McNabb’s career. I hope it reminds everybody of how lucky we are as fans to have a QB like McNabb.
