What a wonderful way to start the off season.
Eagles defensive tackle Mike Patterson was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana under 50 grams, according to a press release obtained from the Evesham Township Police Department Friday.
Apparently Mike was parked chiefin it up with his older brother Tyrone, when Evesham Police noticed Patterson’s car had some ‘minor damage from an accident’, and then smelled some of that sticky icky in the air. Mike admitted the weed was his, and was arrested. His brother Tyrone was also arrested for some minor warrants and resisting arrest.
Supposedly this will be Patterson’s first strike against the leagues substance abuse policy and that is very big. If this were a second offense, the NFL would hand down a four game suspension.
Amazingly this is the first Eagles drug arrest since the Correll Buckhalter South Street incident in 2001. Buck was not charged, but team mate Terrance Carroll was, and the Eagles cut him immediately. Cutting Mike is not an option here. Patterson is the teams first round pick from 2005, who has been given a lifetime contract. He also emerged as one of the best defensive tackles in the NFL last year.
Hopefully this will be a wake up call for Patterson, and not a reoccurring issue. He seems to be a decent guy, and I won’t kill him for smoking a little weed. Now that he has gotten caught though, he needs to let it go so he does not hurt the team in the future. Smoking trees is not worth it for Patterson. He has so much money to look forward to, and the potential to have a great career ahead of him. You would hate to see all of that go up in smoke.
