2008 Free Agents: Defensive Ends

The Eagles are definitely going to be looking for a defensive end. While Trent Cole had a Pro Bowl season, the Eagles did not get much from the rest of their defensive ends. Jevon Kearse has just not worked out, and will be released soon. Darren Howard is another free agent DE who really has not done much. Jerome McDougle spent the entire season on IR(big surprise). Juqua Thomas proved he is really not starter material, and is a solid reserve. Victor Abiamiri did not play much as a rookie until late in the season. He did an OK job, but it is too hard to tell where he is at right now.

There are not be many options in free agency, now that Jared Allen and Terrell Suggs have both been franchised. They were the two premiere players, and after them there is a considerable drop off talent wise.

One name that does seem very interesting is Titans DE Antwan Odom. Odom was drafted by Tennessee in the 2nd round of the 2004 draft. He had done very little for the Titans, until this past season. He was able to start for the Titans and register 8 sacks, 1 FF, and deflected 7 passes. He seems to be a player who may have finally “gotten it”, and is ready to improve off of those solid ‘07 numbers. The Eagles also seem to really like to sign DE’s from the Titans(Juqua Thomas and Kearse), so it will be interesting to see if they pursue Odom.

Justin Smith and Bobby McCray are also possible free agent targets. Both have had success in the past, but are coming off sub par season.
