Fly Guys Blow Another 2 Goal Lead

The Flyers once very comfortable 3 games to 1 lead is now gone. The Washington Capitals have climbed back in this series winning the last two games, including storming back from a two goal deficit last night. The night started off great as Mike Richards slammed back a rebound for an early goal. The puck took a perfect bounce right back to Richards who winded up, and slapped it in the open net. Then in the early 2nd Daniel Briere slips one past Cristobal Huet for the Flyers to take a big 2-0 lead. It looked like the Flyers were going to take care of business at home, and advance to the second round.

Then the collapse began. The Flyers who looked pumped up, and ready to step up, suddenly looked sluggish and slow. Washington constantly kept the puck in the Flyers zone, and just outplayed them the rest of the way. At one point it took so long for the Flyers to clear, I thought the Caps were on a power play.

The Caps tied the game with goals from Nicklas Backstrom and Alexander Semin. The momentum had switched toward Washington and it only got worse from here.

The Flyers had held Alexander “the great” Ovechkin  to only 1 goal all series, but he showed up big time last night. A sweet pass to a flying Ovechkin left Marty Biron helpless and Ovechkin scored on a breakaway to take a huge 3-2 lead.

Ovechkin then scored again on a power play to seal the game, and embarrassed the Flyers. A stunned Wachovia Center was left to nothing more than long periods of silence and random boos. This was a complete melt down by the Flyers, and they are now forced to play a pivotal game 7 in Washington.

The sudden collapse was eerily similar to game 1, and it makes you wonder what happened? How do you get a 2 goal lead, and then just go completely flat like that? A team that was all over the ice in the first period looked like they had cement blocks as skates. Something needs to be done to light a fire under this team, because tomorrow is do or die.

This game was very frustrating to watch, and I was left with a sick feeling in my stomach. A feeling that the Flyers are going to choke this series away.

If you need something to help induce vomiting here are the highlights of the game.
