Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com is reporting that Lito Sheppard visited with the Buccaneers on Wednesday, and they are currently the front runner to deal for the 26 year old corner back. Glazer reports that the deal would be Lito for a 2nd round pick and a player.
Sources I have talked to say that player would be former first round pick wide receiver Michael Clayton. Clayton is probably not the big time wide out Donovan McNabb and the fans have hoped for, but he is the best realistic option at this point. They have tried to go after Randy Moss, Larry Fitzgerald, Roy Williams, and Chad Johnson with no success. Now they are basically forced to settle for a a guy like Clayton who has not played well since his rookie season.
Having two 2nd round picks would give the Eagles some ammo to trade up for a top offensive line prospect, and still have a 2nd round pick.
A few other teams are interested in Sheppard, including the St. Louis Rams who are probably right behind the Bucs in the Lito sweepstakes.
I would hate to see Lito go, but this is how the business of the NFL works. In February it came out that Lito wanted a new contract or he wanted to be traded. The Eagles decided to sign Asante Samuel, and shop the disgruntled corner back around. It appeared that there were no good offers for Lito, but the Eagles have not settled so far. They want more than a 2nd round pick, and think they will get that tomorrow.
