According to Rob Ellis of 610 WIP, the Phillies are holding a press conference at 1 this afternoon. Ellis says the press conference is reportedly to announce the signing of closer Brad Lidge to a contract extension.
Lidge has earned this extension by pitching “lights out” once again this year. This is a great move by the Phillies, and will ensure them a great closer for the next few years. General Manager Pat Gillick never gives out long term contracts to pitchers, so my guess is this will be a 3 year deal.
Lidge was on his way to having a great career with the Houston Astros, but a crucial home run given up to St. Louis Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols in the NLCS appeared to seemed to put him in a funk he would never get out of.
Lidge did get out of this funk with the Phillies. The new team and a fresh start has revived his career, and made him one of the most dominant closers in baseball again. I was skeptical of this move at first, but it has been the biggest addition to the team. I don’t hear anybody crying about Billy Wagner anymore.
Everybody can thank Astros GM( formerly Phillies GM) Ed Wade for making this fantastic trade. The further you push Wade away from this team the more he helps the Phillies out. Thank you Ed!
Extending Lidge has been a huge concern, but getting this done sets this young team up very well for the next few years.
Great move by the Phillies.
