Eagle Eye Observations

Besides the infamous benching that took place in Sunday’s brutal loss to the Ravens, I witnessed a host of other negatives and a few positives too. Here’s a look from the Eagle Eye:
- L.J. Smith is still invisible.
- Lito Sheppard needs a new address in 2009. For the third time this season Sheppard got caught peaking in the backfield. He was then torched for a 53 yard touchdown by Mark Clayton.
- Instant Replay needs work. Two Joe Flacco fumbles came into question. The first was overturned by replay after it was decided that Flacco’s arm was moving forward when he was drilled by cornerback Joselio Hanson. From my vantage point, it appeared Flacco’s arm was propelled forward by the hit, dislodging the ball. The referee didn’t agree. The second fumble occurred on a third an inches. The ball was stripped by Trent Cole, but the officials had already blown the whistle and marked forward progress. Andy Reid asked if he could challenge the play but was told he could not. Ridiculous. Something has to be done about the quick whistle.
- The defense played admirably but it still doesn’t create turnovers. Three more sacks but zero turnovers forced. Stewart Bradley dropped a gift interception early in the second half. By contrast, the Ravens forced five turnovers and converted them into 19 points.
- Quintin Demps returned a kickoff for a touchdown for the first time since Brian Mitchell in 2001.
- Reggie Brown is still invisible.
- Sean Considine needs a new address in 2009. Considine was last seen biting on a T.O. double-move and watching the ex-Eagle wideout race by him for a 72 yard score in Week 2. On Sunday, he allowed reserve Ravens tight end Daniel Wilcox to school him on a three yard touchdown catch. I think we’ve seen enough of this guy.
- Brian Westbrook has lost his burst. It could be the mounting injuries or advanced age or lack of blocking or a combination of the three, but B-West runs like he’s stuck in cement.
- Akeem Jordan started in place of Omar Gaither and recorded eight tackles.
- The special teams continue to commit errors. A blown blocking assignment by Considine and Chris Gocong led to a blocked punt for a safety. Greg Lewis was flagged for a blatant block-in-the-back penalty which negated a 12 yard DeSean Jackson punt return.
- Second year defensive end Victor Abiamiri registered his first career sack. He also went for a scoop n’ score instead of falling on a Flacco fumble. The Ravens recovered the ball.
It was anything but pretty. Now the Arizona Cardinals come to town on a short week. Donovan McNabb will get the start. Will he finish the game? How will the team respond? More questions for the 2008 Eagles. What else is new.

This post is right on. McNabb and Westbrook have received most of the attention but there are a host of ills plaguing this team.
I have no problems with the players you’ve highlighted here but I do have a question;
Didn’t Brown get burned a couple of times this year as well? Or I just plain wrong?
My memory isn’t what it used to be.

November 25th, 2008 at 3:15 pmI haven’t noticed Brown get burned the way Sheppard has. I’m sure he’s been beaten a few times but not for long touchdowns. Then again, my memory isn’t all that stellar either.
