Big Kid Back in Town

Posted by: Scott Tunstall

Shawn Andrews, remember him? The All-Pro guard returned to the Eagles’ locker room yesterday for the first time since undergoing back surgery on October 21. Andrews is eager to return to the field, but understands the rehab process takes time. He had this to say about the chances of returning this season:

“I don’t know what the possibilities are. So I’m back here, working with (head athletic trainer Rick Burkholder) and the guys now, so it’s a matter of getting to that point where I can get out there and push and pull and take some people out.”

No way Andrews plays again in ‘08. In fact, I think his career is in jeopardy. Back difficulties, especially for guys his size, are never a good thing. Let’s cross our fingers and hope for a healthy return in 2009. An offensive line that struggles to run-block can ill afford to lose its best player.

I have to admit this guy pisses me off.  I understand depression- dealing with those who have it is part of my job- but it is still on him to make sure he gets the help he needs.  He’s an adult and has all the resources he needs to do the right thing.

I, for one, take his lower back injury with more than a few grains of salt.

JMO and I may be way off base.

Andrews has always been a mystery. I think the back injury is legit, but I do question Shawn’s desire to play in the NFL. I’ve never dealt with depression first-hand but it’s obviously a serious problem. Andrews can be the best offensive lineman in the game, but it’s on him to do it.
