Has Donovan McNabb finally grown sick and tired of the circus in Philadelphia? Is he ready to fold up his tent after ten seasons and take the DMac5 show to another NFL city? Since being benched, McNabb has completed 72-104 passes for 741 yards with seven touchdowns and one interception. More importantly, he has led the Birds to a 3-0 record during that span. But it’s not McNabb’s play on the field that is making headlines, it’s his comments off the field regarding his future with the franchise.
McNabb has talked candidly in recent weeks during post-game interviews that he is looking forward to a discussion with Eagles’ management after the season ends. Maybe he wants assurances that he is “The Man” in Philly or perhaps he would like to tell Jeff Lurie and Joe Banner that he is fed up with the criticism, the booing and the benching.
Could Donovan request a trade? Would you blame him if he did? For the most part, McNabb has displayed thick skin during his tenure in Philadelphia and laughed-off the negativity heaped upon him. He’s never pulled a Ryan Leaf and pitched a fit in front of a reporter, nor has he cried tears of frustration on the sideline like Vince Young. Instead, he has taken a Gatling gun worth of shots and stood tall against the never-ending barrage of “You suck” and “Trade the bum” chants.
One could hardly blame McNabb if he wanted to leave. I mean, a man can only take so much before he reaches his breaking point. Check out this McNabb quote from Les Bowen’s latest article in the Daily News:
“When you’ve been in one place for 10 years, people get tired of seeing you and they say they want something new,” McNabb said, after Steve Young burbled that McNabb could play another 10 years, at age 32. “Until you’re gone, they don’t realize what they have.”
“…they don’t realize what they have.” What “we” would have if McNabb leaves is Kevin Kolb – who couldn’t even mop up Monday night without throwing a pick six. Is that what fans want? I have serious issues with Andy Reid‘s pass-happy offensive philosophy, but I have no desire to see McNabb in a Bears or Vikings uniform next season. But when it’s all said and done, it won’t make a damn bit of difference what the fans want or don’t want. If McNabb wants to go, the Eagles may have no choice but to grant his desire. So for those who think it’s time to move on to the next franchise quarterback, I have six words for you: Be careful what you wish for.
