Can you think of a better way to end the 2008 regular season than another Eagles-Cowboys throw-down? I sure can’t. In my mind, there is no better or more bitter rivalry in the NFL. On Sunday, the stakes are high. All Dallas has to do is win and they’re in the post-season. For Philly, it’s complicated, but even if they don’t earn a playoff spot, the opportunity to kick the ‘Boys out of the playoffs and send them back to Big D with a loss should be plenty of motivation to show up and play an inspired game.
This heated rivalry has had its share of classic battles. Whether it was Jimmy Johnson and Buddy Ryan pacing the sidelines or Bill Parcells and Andy Reid, these two NFC East neighbors have never gotten along. The finger pointing, the name calling, the shoving matches – we’ve seen it all throughout the years. The Cowboys are wine and cheese. The Eagles are burger and fries. The Cowboys are shirt and tie. The Eagles are tee shirt and blue jeans. You can’t get more polar opposite than these two franchises. However, the main difference between these bickering brothers is one has the hardware and the other doesn’t. We don’t need to get into all that, but let’s just say Eagles fans’ hatred of the Cowboys runs deeper due to five trophies with the name Lombardi engraved on them.
The list of memorable Eagles-Cowboys matchups is long and distinguished. Who doesn’t have fond recollections of the infamous Bounty Bowl, or the time Eagles’ punter Tom Hutton botched the hold on a winning field goal attempt? How about the Pickle Juice game to open the 2000 season, or the clever kneel down by Brian Westbrook last December to seal a victory? Everyone has their favorite games. Some are triumphant, others heartbreaking. That’s why Eagles-Cowboys is so damn good. It’s always back and forth and never disappoints.
So when you’re watching Sunday – dressed in your Westbrook or Dawkins jersey – think back to some of those great moments. You never know, Sunday’s game may provide another dramatic chapter in the history of this storied rivalry. Put the beverage of your choosing on ice and reserve the best seat in your living room. It’s time for Eagles-Cowboys. And it doesn’t get any better.

yes sir, win lose or draw, (i know that’s a bad word for you guys) it’ll always be a classic game with the eagles / cowboys. i’ve always hated buddy ryan as most of you have always hated jimmy johnson. i don’t hate andy reid, i don’t like him, but hate is a strong word for reid. i do respect him. i repect the eagle squad you guys have as well. mcnabb has brought that to your organization. a calm, collective, maturity about himself. that seems to irratate the rabid eagle fan. they want a fire spittin, cussin qb to represent them on that field, that is blue collar just like them. to me this is why most of the rough feelings are towards mcnabb, and of corse the wine and cheese cowboys. well, that maybe the appearence of what you see in dallas, bit thats not what you get from us cowboy fans of today. i’m as blue collar as it gets. i eat cheese with crackers and coffee. i drink beer, not wine. if i’m in a tough mood, i’ll slugg sailor jerry’s 92*proof spiced rum and dr.pepper. i swear, i throw things, and i believe in my teams ability to win. i’ll stick with my boys till the dyin end. and i’ll cuss the $@#&!^$ eagles out all day long if we lose. so hey we ain’t all that different after all my friend. it’ll be a classic again. good luck to the enemy, but as i say, victory for the boys. it was a nice comparrison of team cultures though. times have changed for the average fan. the reason i started liking the cowboys was back in 1970 when they lost to the colts in superbowl 5. they lost to the packers in the first 2 championship games. could have beaten the colts to get into #3 and should’nt have let the vikings into #4. so think about that for a moment and see what history may have been like if the cowboys were’nt considered next years champions in all those early years and had actually won those games.!!!!! thats where my allegence came in. to see a team keep losing but keep comin back for more. sound familiar eagle fans???
also you guys should be very familiar with my alltime hero, roger staubach. he’s a naval accademy graduate and played his big games in philly. he was blue collar, a hiesman winner, an american hero. my dad always said ,”if your gonna like a football player and look up to one, it don’t get any better than staubach.” the kind of man every father would want his boy to emmulate. so was for me. so we’re pretty much cut from the same material the way i see it.
Dave, you represent a minority of Cowboys fans, at least from my experience. I’ve known quite a few and none of them shared your allegiance, respect for history or admiration for good guys like Staubach. And you have to admit, Jerry Jones has never seemed to market his team to the blue-collar demographic. I mean look at his brand new stadium. If that doesn’t scream wealth and white-collar, I don’t know what does. At any rate, may the best team win on Sunday.
yes you are right. and thats why us blue collar cowboy fans are left scratchin are head sometimes. i feel like the majority of us at the landryhat are probably blue collar fans. but jones follows the money trail, no doubt. dallas texas is big money, but as the cowboys are refered to as americas team seems to be a contradiction of statements? i guess i’m just a lover of history. and yes i do “respect” that history. because history will always repeat it’s self. that is a fact. so as the cowboys once started off as blue collar team in a white collar world of dallas, will it become a white collar team in a blue collar world of the average fan? the economy seems to say so???? oh, well, you are right, may the “best” TEAM win on sunday
