Nobody Says It Better Than Brian Dawkins

There are several reasons why I respect Brian Dawkins. His loyalty and honesty being two of the biggest. Not only did he stick up for Donovan McNabb in an NFL Network interview, but he also summed up what it’s like to play sports in the City of Brotherly Love.

“The thing about it is this. Philadelphia, it is a tough place to play. Everybody can’t succeed in Philadelphia,” Dawkins said. “You have to have tough skin. You have to be able to move through booing. You have to be able to play through that stuff on the other side. It’s not all of Philadelphia. There are fans that feel that way. But there are other fans that feel like, ‘Man, you will never understand what we have until he is gone.’ And I don’t think he’s gonna be gone anytime soon for them to feel that. And he’s always handled himself with class. He’s always tried to do the right things and saying the right things.”

No more witnesses. The defense rests. Case closed. How about we stop all the petty name calling and constant attempts to stir controversy. Dawkins is not one of those guys who says what everyone else wants to hear. He tells it like it is.

I don’t take personnel decisions to heart. It’s a business and hard choices must be made. That being said, I will be pissed if Dawkins isn’t given a new deal. He’s not ready to go, nor does he want to go. Warriors like him are harder to find than franchise quarterbacks. Bring him back first and foremost, and I think everything else will fall into place for the 2009 Philadelphia Eagles.

Unfortunately, the Eagles have a long, long history of getting rid of their best players.  8-(

  2. Freak says:

I agree with that, Sharyn, but I think Dawkins stays- or at least they make him a decent offer.

I don’t believe that the Eagles front office will underestimate Dawkin’s leadership.  I have a hunch that the players played just as much (if not more) for Dawk than Reid at the end of the season.

I hope the franchise knows that and act accordingly.

  3. Kyle says:

Give him what he wants.   I’m done with the Eagles if they let him go, Of course I said they same thing when they released Trotter the first time.
This is different, Brian Dawkins is Philadelphia.

  4. Col224 says:

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

  5. SoDev says:

Giants fan says I hates B-Dawk!
Giants fan says I has a lot of respect or him!
Giants fan says I think he should stay an Eagle!
Giants fan says if he doesn’t I’ll take him for a few years! *evil grin*

    ^that was stupid, I know.

  6. BleedGreen says:

Please, no. I cant believe that B-Dawk will be a free agent on 3/1. NO. He IS Philadelphia. He is the heart and soul of that team. We need him. I for one will be SO depressed if they let him go.

I say keep Dawk, Get Boldin (preferred!) or Houshmandzadeh, and if possible get both. Our recivers are the reason why we lost the Championship game this season. They dropped a good 5 TD passes.

    Regarding the Dawkins situation:

If the Eagles had a little more confidence in Demps, I think this would be it for Dawkins. Dawkins is a great leader, and he certainly plays with tenacity and reckless abandon, and I most certainly absolutely love him, but… having said all that, I think deep down the Eagles would prefer to part ways and find younger, cheaper talent to mold. Demps, I think, is going to be a good one. Not every rookie is able to step in and play well his first year. But he was a ball hawk in college. And there’s no reason he can’t do it again in the next level.

I say they sign Dawk to an affordable contract. But, I’m not convinced B-Dawk will make it through the final cuts come training camp/preseason if they see Demps shine in the exhibition games.  B-Dawk is going down like Hugh Douglas, Takeo Spikes, and Trotter. Cut. It will be a sad day. But he will be cut.

  8. Scott says:

Can’t agree Tony. B-Dawk will never be cut. If he can’t play, he’ll quit first.

  9. Tony says:

i hope you’re right. But, I’ve been shocked before with suprise cuts of other beloved Eagles. He may not get cut…maybe, if he’s really ineffective in camp, they’ll ask him to retire before cutting him. Just a gut feeling here..

  10. miguel says:

hey u think weapon x will be back no doubt bout that ,i think wesighn jorden groos and housh and solidify th eguys that will be free angents …….big expectations for 09 season . go eagles wooooooooooooooo!!!

  11. Tony says:

My feeling was correct, unfortunately. Although Dawkins was never cut, he was let go.  I had a strong feeling this would happen. Although Dawk was a tremendous leader, his skills were diminishing. And in this cutthroat NFL world, performance is the ultimate factor in personnel decisions..

  12. Scott says:

I get what you’re saying, Tony. But being cut and choosing to leave via free agency are two entirely different scenarios. Now we’ll never know, but I’m convinced Dawk would have retired before allowing himself to be cut. Let’s say he struggles this season with the Broncos, which I think is a good possibility considering their entire defense is being revamped and it will a brand new system, not at all like JJ’s. If he does have a poor year, I say he hangs it up before letting the Broncos cut him. Just my feelings.

  13. Tony says:

    Possibly.

I’ll say this one last thing about the Dawkins issue. I think the Eagles made the right choice.  Eveybody seems to be upset about letting Dawkins go. Very understandable.
But, personnel issues can’t be deal with emotionally. The Eagles have some up-and-coming guys that need to step up. The Eagles are well-known for handing over the reins to their young players. They (the Eagles FO) have faith that they made the right choice in drafting these guys, and now the time has come to give them their wings.
Dawkins was an important piece of the Eagle defense for many years. However, like most other players, he’s not irreplaceable.  The successful teams reload all the time. Look at the the Steelers. They have a history of dropping their veteran defensive studs and simply reloading, and still winning.
These decisions take guts. And I for one appreciate what the front office is trying to do.  Contrary, to the very first comment above, Dawkins was not one of the Eagles best players, not at 35. If the Eagles thought so, he’d still be on the roster, signed.  The comments saying that Dawkins is Philadelphia is simply irrelevant to winning.  The league is about winning, not loyalty, right or wrong.
Let’s have faith in what the Eagles are trying to do. Not many teams have experienced the success we have for the last decade. They must be doing something right. Let’s support our young guys as now they become the face of the Philadelphia Eagles. We will be fine.

  14. Scott says:

    I couldn’t agree more Tony.
