Runyan Out 4-6 Months

Les Bowen over at the Daily News is reporting Eagles’ free agent right tackle Jon Runyan will miss 4-6 months after undergoing microfracture surgery on his ailing right knee. At 35, this could be the end of the road for Runyan’s NFL career.

Scheduled to hit free agency on the 27th, Runyan may have a tough time finding a team for next season. Would you spend money on an aging right tackle who’s future is in serious doubt? I have no idea if the Birds planned on bringing him back, but it seems their decision may have been made for them. The good news is this comes early enough for Reid and Co. to look for alternatives, either in free agency or the draft.

I’ve always been a Runyan fan and I hope he recovers quickly. And if his days in Eagle green are over, I’d like to thank him for his service. A true tough-guy, Runyan’s leadership and reliability will be missed.

Tough break. The Eagles have some difficult decisions to be made at the tackle position.  Going into this offseason, my preference would have been to keep Runyan and get rid of Thomas.  With this development, I'd have to lean in the other direction.  Runyan is too much of a risk at this point.  That said, he brings a level of nastiness to the line that will be difficult to replace.  If this is in fact the end of the line, he will be missed.
