Sean Jones Signs With Eagles

According to philadelphiaeagles.com, free-agent safety Sean Jones has inked a one-year contract with the Eagles. Jones will help fill the void left by the departures of Brian Dawkins and Sean Considine.

Jones would likely compete at strong safety with Quintin Mikell shifting to free safety. However, he could backup at both spots if Quintin Demps earns the starting free safety job.

A three-year starter for the Browns, Jones, who is 27, has recorded 14 picks in the last three seasons. The fact that the Eagles didn’t give him a long-term deal leads me to believe they weren’t that impressed with him, but he does fill a need.

I like the move. What do you guys think?

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.

I think that the Eagles do like Jones, they are just fearful of two things: his injury last year, and don’t want to limit Demps’ path to starting.  I like this signing because it gives the Eagles the chance to give Demps one more year of not-starting (unless he wins the starting job), gives them a strong starter with a lot to prove this year (or a proven backup if Demps is the starter), and a young saftey who could return to the pro-bowl again this year if he’s back to 100%.  It’s a good signing, allows the Eagles to draft a S much later in the draft now, and lets them concentrate on addressing the offense now.

I was in the car listening to the radio when the deal was announced.  I do find it a bit odd that it’s only a one year deal.  It kind of leads me to believe that they were pretty desperate after Dawkins left.

Since he’s only 27, if they really saw him as contributor beyond one season, they would have given him a 3 or 4 year deal. They clearly have the cash. That being said, I like this signing. He seemed to be a bright spot on a pretty terrible defense the last few years.

I wouldn’t call it desperate. I think getting Springs would have been desperate. Let’s hope the stink of the Browns hasn’t permanently attached itself to him.

What I’ve seen about this kid is that he can play(for the browns), obviously no replacement for dawk, but he can at least play. I think the eagles only gave him the one year because he has some HUGE shoes to fill and they aren’t ready to commit to that, especially with him possibly only being a decent backup if demps comes out and earns the start.
