Justin Tuck Throws Down the Gauntlet

It’s never too early to make bold predictions about the upcoming 2009 season. A friend of mine, who is unfortunately a Giants fan, emailed me this article from the NY Post. Justin Tuck – who is one scary looking dude – declared the G-Men “the team to beat.”

I never know what to think when players make statements like this in March. Does every other team in the NFL cut this out and use it as motivation to prove Tuck wrong? Or do they just blow it off as “who cares” off-season talk? I’d put my money on the latter. Hopefully, players (especially the Eagles) are too busy getting themselves ready for 2009 to take notice.

Interesting to note. Here’s what Eli Manning said about which team is the team to beat:

“I assume Pittsburgh is probably the team to beat,” he said. “In the NFC, there are a lot of good teams. We just have to do our job. It doesn’t really matter if you’re the team to beat or not.”

Those Mannings know how to be diplomatic, eh? Normally, I would have ignored this story entirely, but it’s a slow news day in Eagles Nation. The Draft is 38 days away. Tick… tick… tick….

Dick's Sporting Goods presents "Hell Week":

When K-Rod made this same proclamation earlier this (baseball) offseason about the Mets- who share a division with the World Champions and missed the playoffs last year- it became official: “the team to beat” has jumped the shark. It’s like if players began to call their shot every at bat, or every Super Bowl team made a “guarantee”.

Eli Manning did some smart, effective side-stepping of this one, and we can chalk it up as a “who cares”.

Good point, Matt. I agree it’s a “who cares.”

  • SoDev

    Who cares, no doubt.

If you’ve ever heard Tuck speak you would know that your subject line comes off at least 50x more aggressive than it was stated. The dude is as laid back and casual as the come. No doubt he answered the question in a casual voice and a smirk. As if, what else do you expect him to say.

…and Eli, well he is just the consummate professional.

SoDev – Of course my subject line made it sound worse. That’s how I bait Giants fans like you to read and comment  ;o)

Like I said, sloooooowww news day…

    Bait, lol… I hear ya.
