T.O. Shuffles Off to Buffalo
Just goes to show you, talent will always win out in the NFL. Terrell Owens was unemployed for less than 48 hours before being signed by a team that has apparently been sleeping as soundly as Rip Van Winkle for the last ten years. That team is the Buffalo Bills. Sigh. Well, scratch the Bills off your list of Super Bowl contenders. Not that they were on it anyway with “Mr. 8-8″ Dick Jauron roaming the sidelines. Truth is, I actually kinda like the boys from Western New York (I grew up near Buffalo). Now, I get to sit back [...]
Sean Jones Signs With Eagles
According to philadelphiaeagles.com, free-agent safety Sean Jones has inked a one-year contract with the Eagles. Jones will help fill the void left by the departures of Brian Dawkins and Sean Considine. Jones would likely compete at strong safety with Quintin Mikell shifting to free safety. However, he could backup at both spots if Quintin Demps earns the starting free safety job. A three-year starter for the Browns, Jones, who is 27, has recorded 14 picks in the last three seasons. The fact that the Eagles didn’t give him a long-term deal leads me to believe they weren’t that impressed with [...]
A Mexican Mock Draft
My muchachos over at footballburrito.com invited me to participate in a 1st round Mock Draft this week. I was more than happy to don my GM cap and proudly represent my beloved Eagles. Being the only representative with two picks, I had to study twice as hard. Now, I tried to draft the way I think the FO should and will pick, but we all know predicting what they’ll actually do on draft day is next to impossible. At any rate, I followed the board and selected two players who I believe can provide immediate help. I was also offered [...]
Sean Jones to Visit Eagles
Free agent strong safety Sean Jones will be in town Friday to visit the Eagles. After flirting with Shawn Springs, the Birds will take a look at the ex-Brown to see if he fits into their immediate plans. Now, Jones is a legit strong safety, which leads me to believe Quintin Mikell would slide to free safety. I like this scenario better than Sheldon shifting from cornerback. Mikell played a lot of center field last season anyway. I like Jones as a player. At 6’1″, 225 he would bring needed size to a smallish secondary. Stay tuned for more.
Greg Lewis Traded to Patriots
The Eagles have dealt seldom used wide receiver Greg Lewis to the Patriots, according to NFL Network guru Adam Schefter. The little man known as G-Lew lasted seven seasons in Philly. Amazing. He gave it his all but dropped passes and inconsistency hindered his development. No word yet on what the Birds got in return. I doubt it was more than 6th or 7th round pick. This makes the second trade during the free-agency period. Maybe they’re making room for Terrell Owens? Chirp… chirp… chirp. Sorry, bad joke. More to come. Update: The deal was for a 2009 draft pick, [...]
Who Saw This Coming?
Uhhhh… I guess everyone saw this coming. Locker-room baby and all-around malcontent Terrell Owens just got dumped by Dallas. At long last, Jerry Jones and his over-inflated ego made a correct decision. Whoa! I can’t believe I just praised leatherface Jones for a good managerial move. Find the nearest shelter. The end is nigh. Since every other NFL blogger will be penning their two-cents on Mr. Owens, I guess it’s only fitting I offer my angle on the guy who once destroyed a great thing with the Eagles. I endured the TO circus a few years back and am actually [...]
A New Safety for the Eagles?
No deal is done yet, but apparently Shawn Springs’ trip to Philly had nothing to do with adding depth to the cornerback position. Ladies and germs, Mr. Springs might be the Eagles‘ answer at free safety. A 33-year old cornerback playing free safety for the first time in his NFL career? I guess it could work. Although, it seems puzzling to replace a 35-year old legit free safety with a 33-year old guy who has spent most of his career playing outside the hashes. Is this a sign of desperation, or simply part of the master-plan being engineered from the [...]
Shawn Springs Visits Eagles
Well, the Eagles finally awoke from their free-agency slumber and have invited ex-Redskin cornerback Shawn Springs in for a visit, according to Philadelphiaeagles.com. He’s in town today and tomorrow. A 12-year veteran, Springs would provide great depth to an already strong group of cornerbacks that include Asante Samuel, Sheldon Brown and Joselio Hanson. Stay tuned for more.
All Quiet on the Eagles Front
A fast and furious first few days of free agency has slowed to a crawl. Especially in Eagles Nation. One visit. One signing. Meanwhile, Dawkins, Buckhalter and Considine have left for better opportunities. LJ Smith should be next. Tra Thomas is apparently talking with the Jaguars, who need offensive line help. TJ Houshmandzadeh is now a Seahawk. Derrick Ward is now a Buc. Rumors are safety Jim Leonhard is drawing interest from the Eagles. Although, no meeting has been scheduled. So, what’s next? That remains a mystery. Could the Birds be finished in free agency? Seems unlikely. I still think [...]
TJ Whatshisname Gets the Big “Star”Bucks
Finally, supposed #1 receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh has found a new team. And that team is the Seattle Seahawks. Hope he packs plenty of raincoats and galoshes for his relocation to the Pacific NW. Here’s hoping he isn’t the next Deion Branch. Initially, I wanted the guy, but the more I’ve read in the last few days, I’m glad the Eagles didn’t pursue him. He seemed to conduct himself like a baby because the “good” teams weren’t beating down his door. He went as far as to say, and I’m paraphrasing, “I may be 32, but I have the body of [...]
Praise for the Eagles
I realize most fans are still livid at what happened or didn’t happen over the weekend. The wound of Dawkins leaving is still fresh, as is the frustration that the Eagles have done very little to improve their roster. I’m not here to tell you how to feel, but I would like to offer a different perspective. While many of the pundits at ESPN and the NFL Network are crucifying the Birds for their miserly ways and lack of activity, there are some respected football writers who seem to think they know what they’re doing.
Dawkins Breaks Down
This is why we all loved #20 wearing Eagle green. In an interview with Derrick Gunn yesterday he let his emotions get the best of him. I can’t wait to watch his Hall of Fame induction speech. Se ya Dawk. It won’t be the same without you.
