The Eagles will be picking 21st in a couple weeks provided they don’t trade out of the slot. What kind of player can we expect if they stay put is anyone’s guess. Fingers crossed it will be a future Pro Bowler. History tells us not to get our hopes up, though.
Here’s the players selected 21st overall since 2000.
2008 – Sam Baker, OT – Started five games. Looks like a keeper.
2007 – Reggie Nelson, S – Started 28 games his first two seasons and recorded 7 interceptions. Pretty good.
2006 – Laurence Maroney, RB – Injuries, injuries, injuries. Has shown flashes, but must stay healthy.
2005 – Matt Jones, WR – The ex-quarterback finally played okay in ’08. Legal troubles have left him unemployed.
2004 – Vince Wilfork, DT – Perfect 3-4 nose tackle. Started every game the last two seasons. Great pick.
2003 – Jeff Faine, C - Is on his third team already. Capable starter, but not a Pro Bowler.
2002 – Daniel Graham, TE – Good blocker with a nose for the end zone. Not a world beater, but solid.
2001 – Nate Clements, CB – Signed FA deal with 49ers two years ago. A starter his whole career.
2000 – Sylvester Morris, WR – Caught 48 passes as a rookie. Career ruined by numerous knee injuries.
A hit or miss bunch for sure. Morris and Jones are the only busts. Clements and Wilfork have made the Pro Bowl. Graham won two Super Bowls with the Patriots. If the Eagles do their homework they can land a good player. Let’s hope their 21 means blackjack.
