Eagles Going After Tony Gonzalez?

AUTHOR: | IN: Eagles | COMMENTS: 15 Comments |

Ran across this nugget on Moving the Chains about the Eagles offering a third-round pick for Tony G. According to the report, the Chiefs want a second rounder.

Didn’t the Birds go down this road at the 2008 trade deadline? If accurate, they must have a hankering for Gonzo. Interesting? Tony would definitely qualify as an offensive “weapon.”

I doubt Reid would hand over a second, but you never know.

Anthony - Yeah, I agree. It makes me wonder if the Eagles were really that interested in Tony at the trade deadline last year. If they were, I guess they just refused to part with a second round pick.

Oh, well. Like you said, I guess the team philosophy of valuing draft picks over 33-year-old vets is iron clad. I would have made this deal in a second!!

Just found out the 2nd Rder wasn't even for this year! That is a steal. If the Eagles were just sticking to their guns and refusing to give up a 2nd I think its a mistake. Ok, I'm done.

Well, looks like we can forget about this possibilty. Looks as if he is going to Atlanta for 2nd rounder. If the Eagles were really in the mix, it begs that age old question of taking established veterans who make more money or keeping draft picks. I think teams overvalue picks many times. Yeah, youd have to pay quite a bit to TG and he wouldnt be here long, but there is a good chance that whoever they draft in Rd 2 wont even be on the team in 3 years anyway. I say all this because I believe Gonzalez could veto any trade and I think he did so last year to Atlanta, so my guess would be that if both teams had offered a 2nd Rd pick and TG could choose, he'd choose the Eagles. Just a guess, but either way, the draft can be a crapshoot, a TE who catches 90 balls a year every single year is a known commodity. I'd go with the sure thing.

The Eagles will NOT give up a first-round pick. No other team will either.

I like this move, even if it's for a 2nd. Celek is a good, young TE. Bringing TG in would have an immediate effect on our offense as well as providing a young TE with a great mentor. If we're not going to go after Boldin, this is one hell of a contingency plan.

they should give out a first round pick

If Reid is willing to part with a second-round pick, I say yes. It would make more sense to get Gonzo than draft someone like Cook or Ingram, who may or may not be a player.

That's kinda what I was getting at. I knew he had skipped the voluntary workouts, which isn't unusual, but was thinking there may have been indications that he would be making things difficult for the new coach/gm. So, what's your feeling? Do the Birds swing this deal?

I think the cheifs arnt going to give up t g because he is the best tight end ever born if they want tg they half to give a first round

Anthony - My friends over at the KC blogs assure me that Tony will not be attending mini-camps and possibly training camp. He wants out. Of course, like Sheldon, that doesn't mean the Chiefs will let him go. But the new regime is looking for young guys to build with. Todd Haley's offense doesn't feature the tight end, then again he hasn't had one as good as Gonzo.

Last year the Birds apparently offered a third-round pick and Carl Peterson said no. He's gone, so perhaps Scott Pioli would take that offer. Or if Reid is serious about getting Tony, just give up the second rounder. I got to thinking, they already have a young tight end. Do they really want another one? Hell, just go out and sign Daniel Wilcox or someone like that.

I would love the move, but what I am confused about is that I thought the Chiefs were done entertaining offers. With a new quarterback and regime it seems strange that they would get rid of Gonzalez. Like you said Scott, they went through this last year and didn't get it done and it hasn;t seemed to me that the asking price is huge, so what's missing?

I agree with both of you, Tony put up some big-time numbers with a terrible team last year. With Donovan throwing him the ball he could be deadly in third downs.

Chris - You're right about the "win now" mode. It seems they are in it already with the moves for Peters, Andrews and Weaver.

Getting Tony would lessen the need to draft a tight end this year. That would leave them with running back and corner as the only pressing needs. Even if they lost a second, they could still land a runner in the first and a corner in the third.

I am with you Scott, I find it hard to believe Reid would pony up a second round pick for Gonzo. If he can be had for a third round pick it would be a nice move that would immediately bolster the offensive attack and red zone efficiency. Perhaps more interestingly, I think it would send a clear signal the Birds have entered "win now or else" mode.
