I’m going to do what any GM worth his salt would never do on draft day. I’m going to go with the gut and toss out how I think the first few rounds will play out for our beloved Eagles. I’m not going to include any wild trade scenarios; there are too many to comprehend.
#21 – Moreno is gone and Reid has no interest in Pettigrew. It’s too early for Donald Brown. Eagles pick cornerback/return man Darius Butler. Even before Sheldon started whining about his contract, the Birds were thinking cornerback. Sheldon is already 30, so his time here is winding down. Remember in 2002 when Sheldon and Lito were picked, even though they had Vincent and Taylor? Deja vu. Butler could be starting opposite Asante as early as 2010.
#53 – The Eagles don’t need Westbrook’s replacement. It would be nice to get one, but it’s not an absolute necessity. Leonard Weaver will get enough carries to fill the big back role. The pick here is LeSean McCoy. He’s not very big, but he is shifty and catches the ball well. He’ll be what Ryan Moats was supposed to be.
#85 – A tight end is still needed. Brent Celek is on his way to a Chad Lewis type career. A good hands guy who will be a reliable target between the hashes. The Birds need an athlete who can stretch the field. That player is Florida’s Cornelius Ingram. He’s raw and not particularly adept at blocking, but his speed and big play ability are too good to ignore.
Stop by this afternoon. I’ll be logging a Draft Day Diary. Feel free to comment. In addition, I’m hoping to have a Live Blog Chat set up around 3pm. It’s a FanSided.com Sports Network collaboration. If we can pull it off, it will be just like the chats Dave Spadaro has at PE.com. It should be a lot of fun.
That’s all I got. Whatever happens this weekend, remember to temper your expectations. I’ve watched every Andy Reid draft. They are always unpredictable and somewhat frustrating. Try to relax. It may not seem like it, but the front office knows what they’re doing, for the most part.
