Ellis Hobbs is a Quote Machine

Over the last couple days, a number of Ellis Hobbs‘ quotes have surfaced across the blogosphere regarding his trade from the Pats to the Birds. I think Hobbs is a good, not great, cornerback who is very much opposite of Sheldon in his style of play. Hobbs is a gambler, while Brown is more of a technician. They may differ on the field, but they both know how to deliver a memorable interview off the field.

Here are my favorite lines from Hobbs, post-trade:

“I know that it is not going to come easy. Like I said, you have to go out there and prove it. Nobody wants a paper champ.”

Nobody wants a People’s Champ, either. By the way, check out FredEx’s blog. It’s not legit, but it’s amusing. The area code on the blog (214) is from Dallas. Fred owns and operates a BB-Q in his hometown of Lakeland, Florida. Nice try, Cowpoke fan.

More from Hobbs:

“I feel I have proved myself enough in this league that I can sustain a position and do my thing in the NFL, but I definitely haven’t done enough to be out there as a player where I am that guy and that’s where I want to get to. Understanding that, I definitely want to try to make this my home.”

In other words, he knows he’ll have to earn it if he wants to stay in Philly.

I have no idea how Hobbs will be used this season. Fourth corner? Kick returner? Starter? I do know that he’s played only RCB his whole career, which happens to be Sheldon’s current spot. Ahem.

According to Sheldon, he will report to mini-camp this weekend. However, he had this to say:

“I’m the leader on the football team, and it’s bad for players to see me in a situation where I’m not happy. But I’m not going to blow up the NovaCare Complex. I’m not going to be one of the guys who puts on a show week in and week out when the media comes to my locker.”

Uh… too late Sheldon. You might not “pull a TO”, but if you don’t think the reporters will be surrounding your locker after every practice, you must not have been paying much attention during the TO/Westbrook/Lito contract squabbles. Oh, and I think your overestimating how much your teammates care about your contract. They care about their own contract, not yours.

Brown may in fact behave like a good little soldier and report to all of the camps and OTAs. However, these things have a way of escalating as summer approaches. See Simon and Trotter.

I have one last point on this subject. When you have two quality starters at cornerback, a nickel back who just inked a five-year contract and two young, developing corners, why would you trade for a starting cornerback? It’s clear the Birds are going hard after a Super Bowl this season. Distractions and headaches have a tendency to sully a Championship environment.

Alas, poor Sheldon! I knew him….

Soup - You're one of the few Pats fans I've seen give Ellis high marks. Most continue to trash the guy because of the Plax catch in the Super Bowl. Like I said, I think he's good and from what I remember from watching him play, he does give great effort.

i think as long as ellis is an eagle ,i love him!!!!!!!!!thats a n EAGLES fan at heart {period)

Agreed; whether or not he wants it, Brown is going to be a divisive force in the locker room, if only because the media won't let the story go.

As a Pats fan I can tell you that the Eagles got a hell of a player in Hobbs. He may not be the best cornerback, but he will give you 100% on every down, regardless of injury or situation.
