What a Difference a Year Makes

I checked in on Matt Mosley’s NFC Beast chat today.  I like Mosley; he does a good job covering the NFL’s best division on his blog. A lot of hot topics were discussed: Jason Campbell’s future in D.C., Brian Orakpo being moved to OLB, Ramses Barden’s fantasy impact and the possibility of Felix Jones being the #1 back in Big D.

Oh yeah, the Eagles were brought up too. I pulled some quotes that piqued my interest.

Mosley on JMac:

“I think he’ll [Maclin] be on the field quite a bit in Week 1. I know the Eagles had some injuries, but DeSean Jackson would’ve fought his way into the starting lineup [last season] without injuries. Maclin will be starting by midseason at the latest.”

Starting by midseason? I hope he’s right, but we shall see.

Mosley on where the Birds’ receiving corps ranks in the NFC East:

I think the Eagles certainly have the best receiving corps now. The Giants are No. 2, Cowboys No. 3 and the Skins are in fourth. I love Santana Moss, but one of those other guys needs to step up. Randle El should not be a No. 2 receiver at this point in his career.”

I agree 100%. Just three years ago, the Eagles had nothin’ at wideout. Now with Curtis, Avant, DJax and Maclin, they are suddenly loaded. Three of the four being draft picks signals Reid has turned a corner when it comes to evaluating pass catchers.

Mosley on the best newcomer in the division:

“But the biggest impact might be Jason Peters in Philly…  He’ll make a huge impact on the left side — especially in the running game.”

More praise for Peters. The more I read on the guy the more I love the trade. He’s just an incredible athlete for a left tackle.

Mosley on the BIG GAME:

“I think the Eagles have as good a chance as anyone to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl, thus getting me back to Miami.”

More Super Bowl talk. Makes me nervous in May, but I’ll take it.

Mosley on the Eagles running back situation:

“LeSean McCoy should be an excellent backup and the Weaver kid can help you in a pinch. And I’m pretty sure the underwhelming (but talented) Lo Booker is still on the roster.”

Booker is on the roster for now. I’ll be shocked if he makes the team.

Mosley on the most unheralded Birds’ defender:

“Quintin Mikell. Really, really nice player who’s been overshadowed by Dawkins.”

Good stuff from Mosley. I’ve had my problems with ESPN lately, but Mosley does a fine job covering the Beast.
