Friday Ramblings

Not much Eagles‘ news to report or comment on. With that in mind, I thought I would share some thoughts on a few different topics.

How to fix the Sixers: Hire a decent coach and keep him for three years. Changing philosophies every 18 months is ridiculous. Dump Sam Dalembert. He’s never become what he should have. Play Speights at the five. A front line of Brand, Young and Speights will be fine in the East. Dwight Howard is the only “young” center to worry about.

How to fix the Flyers: Goalie is an issue, but Biron was good enough the last two seasons. The real problem was defensive breakdowns at the wrong times and the stars not stepping up. I love Carter and Richards but neither guy was good against the Penguins. If you want to be a superstar, you have to show up every night and contribute, especially in the playoffs. Also, add a couple players who have won a Cup before. Call them hired guns if you want. Just go get them. John Madden, Todd Marchant, Jere Lehtinen and Scott Niedermayer are all free agents.

I still haven’t seen the new Star Trek. I’ve yet to find anyone who hated it. Most are calling it one of the best movies they have EVER seen. High praise. I’m not a Trekkie, so I will be interested to see if I dig it. Maybe I’ll crawl from my hovel and catch it this weekend.

I miss bands like Soundgarden and Alice in Chains. The music industry has been trying to kill rock for decades. I think they may have finally succeeded. I know there are some quality hard rock bands out there like Slipknot and Godsmack, but no one comes close to Metallica in the 80s. They had an edge that is lacking today.

I wonder how long before the Twitter phenomenon burns out. I’m saying by this time next year it will be a thing of the past, replaced by some other impersonal internet form of communication.

I couldn’t leave you without an Eagles fix. Bucky Brooks from is grading the best offseasons. Guess who’s #1 on his list? Here’s a taste:

“The Eagles have been tantalizingly close to winning a title in the Andy Reid era, but their impressive offseason this year may finally result in a championship crown landing in the City of Brotherly Love.”

All this Eagles love is freakin’ me out. I liked it better when the national media despised them for every move they made or didn’t make.

I agree that the industry is killing hard rock, but there is still a few bands (besides Metallica) that float my boat. If you haven’t already, check out Trivium, Mastadon (latest CD), All That Remains (any CD), and my top two bands, Machinehead and Mudvayne. If you miss old school Metallica, try Trivium (CD: The Crusade)and Machinehead (CD: The Blackening). If you don’t like those, sorry. :)

These 3 months ahead of us are agonizing…
Funny that you should mention the new StarTrek movie – we plan on checking it out this PM. Will probably twitter my review on your page.

Drew – I’ll be on the lookout for a review.

Midnite – Thanks for the recommendations. I’ve been meaning to check out Mudvayne. Not a big Mastadon fan, but Trivium and Machinehead sound like winners.

Scott: Mudvayne has been my favorite band for many years (I put Metallica and Pantera in their own category of bada$$, and will always have them at the top of the list). I play bass guitar, and still think that Cliff Burton of Metallica(R.I.P.) was the best metal bassist of all time. However, I think Mudvayne’s bassist (Ryan Martinie) is the best metal bassist now. Check out their CD “L.D. 50″, and you’ll see what I mean. Hope you like it!
