Pick a QB, any QB

Apparently, the Eagles have plenty of cap space. More than enough to hand out some of those “I will have outplayed the value of my contract in three years and want a new one” deals. Guys like Stew Bradley, Quintin Mikell and Bunk might be targets, if they are willing to put an X on the dotted line.

I have confidence the brain trust will lock down the core of the team. A more pressing issue for me is quarterback. Both McNabb and Kolb have two years remaining on their current contracts. Donny Mac will be nearing the dreaded age of 35 in 2011. That’s Dawkins, Runyan, Tra territory, folks.

Even if Kolb never gets a start in the next two seasons, he will become a free agent in 2011. (Actually, who will or won’t be an UFA is sketchy until a new CBA agreement is reached, but for argument’s sake let’s ignore this fact.)

One or both signal callers will have to be extended at some point. Will the Birds have the balls confidence to allow McNabb to enter free agency and roll with Kolb? If Kolb receives a new deal and McNabb doesn’t, well, I don’t need to tell you what that means. And if Don gets another payday and Kev doesn’t, well, Reid and Co. will be admitting that Kolb was a mistake selection back in 2007.

Something has to give in the next twenty-four months. They could ink both players, but I wonder if Kolb would re-up to be a backup. If he knew other teams would show interest, he would bolt for sure. The dude seems like a fierce competitor who wants to be a starter — somewhere.

I guess much of this will depend on McNabb’s performance and health. If he displays evidence of decline or suffers another major injury, he will likely be shown the door. Smart teams like the Eagles don’t dole out millions to players on the downside of their careers.

However, in order to fairly assess Kolb, they will have to see him in more than just mop-up duty. Unless the FO is convinced he can be the man. The offense has been entirely reloaded in the last three years, so it will be primed to be deadly by 2011, whoever is under center.

Tell me what you guys and gals think.

Who will be the Eagles quarterback in 2011?

Kolb does have zero leverage, but I can't see them lying to the guy. Maybe a two-year deal would be enough. If he becomes the starter and proves he's legit, then sign him to a long-term deal.

I would just screw over Kolb. Re-sign him for, say, four years promising only that he'll be the starter after McNabb. Then re-sign McNabb for however long is necessary. Hell, promise Kolb the job in 2011. He's got no leverage to do anything about it.
