Which Eagle Will Breakout in 2009?

AUTHOR: | IN: Eagles | COMMENTS: 18 Comments |

I love predicting so-called “breakout” players prior to a new Eagles‘ season. I haven’t always had the best of luck, although last year I went with Quintin Mikell, who ended up having a career year.

So, who will it be this season? Which player will shift his game into a higher gear and enter the conversation as the best in the NFL at their respective position? There are plenty of candidates.

My 2009 breakout player is: Brodrick Bunkley.

Bunk is already an exceptional run defender. However, his rep at Florida State was as a pocket pusher. A guy who could get to the quarterback. This is the area he needs to improve and I believe he will. Look for 60-70 tackles, 6 sacks and a bunch of hurries from Bunk in ’09.

It’s time to lay your cards on the table Eagles Nation. Don’t be shy. All I’m asking for is a name in the comments. This is your chance to look smart. Then you can come back here in December and tell me “I told you so.” Give me your breakout player.

Bryan Smith.
He was all over the field last pre-season, and spent the year watching, learning, and gaining weight. Outstanding college player with great speed and instincts, he just needed to adjust to NFL size and complexity. The Birds spent a third round pick on him in 2008, and I'm sure they expect value from him this year. See him spelling Abiamiri/Parker on passing downs; occasionally even dropping in a zone blitz and allowing Gocong to rush from the end.

Trevor Laws and Victor Abiamiri...only because I met them at seacrets in O.C. and were decent guys.

I think its gonna be brent celec he showed that he can come in & be a starter in the plyoffs with a couple of tds he can improve his bloking & hands & his also finally going to start his gonna be one of the elite tight ends of the league in couple of years

This year's breakout player will be TE Brent Celek. He showed his signs late last season and has had a full offseason to work with Mcnabb as the clear #1 TE. With another deep threat in Jeremy Maclin arriving in Philly, the middle of the field should open up for Celek to be a highly productive TE. McNabb should be in line for a big season.

I believe Donovan McNabb will have the best season of his career and will win the MVP in the Superbowl.

stewart bradley is the breakout player of 2009. todd herremans will make the probowl.

I am going with Joselio Hanson. i think he is going to step up big and get in the vicinty of 8 picks this year. He is going to do so well that by next year (2010-2011 season) he will be the starting CB opposite Samuel, demand a bigger contract, get it, and then realize that playing outside is a lot different then being the nickel back as he gets burnt and is back to nickel by mid season. That is my prediction and I am sticking with it.

Can I go with a rookie sleeper to make the team? I'm going with Brandon Gibson over Reggie Brown. It seems silly to think the Eagles would take similar receivers and not go with experience, but something tells me this guy has something no one knows about.

I have to agree with Avant. With Jackson doing well last year, the focus will be on him and Maclin an awful lot. I also think Celek will have a good year so that should leave Avant with a big spot to shine in. Hopefully that doesn't push up his price tag for at the start of next season.

I agree with Stewart Bradley

It's gotta be Maclin. The Birds had no shot at Maclin in the draft, and he fell right into their laps. He's a humble kid who is bigger, and rumored to be faster than Desean. With the depth at receiver and his return ability, Maclin could easily explode.

Abiamiri - He'll win the starting left end job and get 8 sacks.

My breakout player is Jason Avant. He's in a contract year and McNabb knows the guy is money on third down. I think 50 grabs for around 600 yards and 5 TDs is reasonable. Those aren't gaudy numbers, but for a number three receiver who has never caught more than 32 passes in a season, it's got to be a breakout.

Somebody else already said Stewart Bradley. I think he is Brian Urlacher with more athleticism. So I agree with that.
As far as someone who is more under the radar, I'll go with Quintin Demps. He showed talent last year, and even if there were some mental lapses, he's got the size, speed, and coverage instincts to step into Dawk's shoes.

LeSean McCoy

Westbrook will likely out the first few games with his recovering ankle and at the ripe age of 30 is on the decline. Therefore McCoy who was a start at local Pitt University will bear some of the load. Im not saying anything huge but probably 500-700 yards rushing, 100 receiving, and 5-7 touchdowns. But watch out for him in '10.

i'm going out on a limb and going with brent celek. he's got more experience under his belt and more time in the system. he's put on some muscle in the off season and he shined in the playoffs. i see brent taking a big step this year, especially with ingram pushing him strong

I was tempted to go with Demps or Jackson, but I'll stick with Stewart Bradley. I think this is the year people stop talking about that fat pantload in New York as the top MLB in the division and rightly recognize Bradely as one of the best young LBs in the game.
