A Little Housekeeping
I’m back from the beach and ready for the last week until Training Camp ‘09 kicks off. That’s right Eagles Nation, this Sunday night the rookies and select vets will report to NovaCare. On July 29, the remaining veterans will report and full squad practices are set to begin on the 31st. It’s close. Can you feel it? I sure as hell can.
Here are a few nuggets I missed late last week.
Terrific article from Delware Online about the grueling nature of Andy Reid’s camps. Here’s a great quote from Omar Gaither:
“If nobody tells you, you don’t realize how bad it’s going to be. You’re like, ‘It’s camp. Everybody has camp.’ No, camp here is not like everybody else’s. You have to come in and you have to realize that it’s going to kick you in the pants.”
Get ready rooks and free agents. This ain’t college or Cincy or Bills country or Seahawk territory. It’s Philly, baby.

After Pete Prisco inexplicably omitted Asante Samuel from his top cornerbacks, I was ready to scratch his name off my reading list. He redeemed himself slightly by including Quintin Mikell among his best safeties.

ESPN’s John Clayton pegged the Reid/Heckert duo as the numero uno coach-general manager combo in the league. If Scott Pioli hadn’t left New England, he and Belichick would have won in a landslide. My question is this: How much input does Heckert really have? I realize Big Red has final say on all personnel decisions, but is Heckert the guy pulling the strings during free agency and the draft? I’d really like to know what the power breakdown looks like over at NovaCare.

Adam Caplan from Scout.com is expecting Jeremy Maclin contract talks to heat up this week. I would hope so. He’s supposed to be in Philly on Sunday. At any rate, both sides seem to believe JMac will be in camp on time. The Birds have an excellent track record signing their youngsters.

In the who cares story of the weekend, Jack Iguana (I’m done trying to spell his last name) was acquitted of burglary chargers stemming from an incident in 2006. Whatever happened to a speedy trial? Regardless, at least Ike can put the whole situation behind him and focus on earning a spot on a roster with very few holes.

I know a guy who knows tom heckert. the power breakdown in the eagles front office goes like this, from my understanding. Andy Reid and Tom Heckert work together on the draft. As far as free agents go, Andy and Tom make up a list of players that they want to have and then they submit this to Joe Banner. Joe then tells them which players they are allowed to have and how much money they can commit to said player.
July 20th, 2009 at 1:41 pmThanks, bula! I’ve heard the two work closely together, but the cynic in me always wondered how true that really was.
