Training Camp 2009 hasn’t even officially begun yet and already the Eagles are making headlines. Andy Reid met with the press at Lehigh University at around 5pm. According to Reid, Brian Westbrook has a chance to return to the practice field by mid-August. It’s not clear what he’ll be doing when he returns. Participating in full squad practice? Sitting on a stationary bike? Icing his knee and ankle 24/7? Sampling the fine camp cuisine? At any rate, the hope is he’ll be ready by the season opener.
Surprise, surprise, Victor Abiamiri is hurt again. He skipped all the trouble of waiting until the pads go on and strained his pectoral muscle. I have no idea how he did it, but he’s expected to miss at least two weeks. At this point, I have zero confidence in this guy. He’s turning into another Derrick Burgess. Can’t. Stay. Healthy. The injury opens a door for Chris Clemons to battle Juqua Parker at left end.
And of course Jeremy Maclin is still unsigned. Why? Because the NFL hasn’t figured out how to get all its first-round picks signed BEFORE camp opens. Three months is more than enough time to ink deals. This is beyond ridiculous. As of now, I believe only 5 first rounders are under contract. That’s laughable. Instead of moving the Draft to primetime, how about devising a system that gets rookies into training camp on time? Are you listening Roger Goodell?!?!
