Eagles Camp Notes: July 28th

Posted by: Scott Tunstall

Day two of rooks and selected vets practices went off without a hitch. The rest of the team will arrive in Philly tomorrow. Friday, they’ll strap the pads on for real. That’s when the fun begins. Here are a few notes from today:

- Maclin remains MIA. Visions of Bunkley in 2006 are dancing in my head. I hope I’m wrong.

- Camp darlings who won’t make the team: Danny Amendola and Brandon Gibson. Following the Training Camp Live chat on PE.com was interesting. Some eager beavers are already penciling in Amendola as a possible “Wes Welker” type and/or punt returner. He may end up being those things, but it won’t be in Philly. As for Gibson, it’s a crowded picture at receiver. Maybe a practice squad candidate.

- Speaking of PE.com. I don’t write this enough, but Dave Spadaro and his gang do an excellent job covering all things Birds. Most notably is their daily training camp coverage. I get downright giddy watching 7-on-7 drills and red zone packages at work, even though they tell me absolutely nothing.

- Yesterday it was Macho Harris. Today’s rookie phenom was Cornelius Ingram. He made several big grabs, including one for six from Kolb. He was targeted frequently in the red zone, which could end up where he displays the most value this season. If the big man continues to impress, I’m going to have to pull out my nickname machine. Early offering: “Code Red.”

- CSN Philly queried Reid about rookie hazing:

“We don’t do all the hazing, that type of thing,” Reid said. “I think it’s important that you get the young guys ready as fast as you can. I just haven’t seen that as being something that helps the young guys’ progress. That’s why I don’t do it.”

- Westy is still rehabbing the knee/ankle. Allegedly, he looked “smooth” during lateral drills. He even played soccer with trainer Rick Burholder (via PE.com). Awful pun alert: His goal is to stay healthy.

- Meanwhile, Shady McCoy continues to get lots of reps. How large a role he plays will be determined. In my mind, he’s too talented to keep on the bench.

On a much more sobering note. Jim Johnson is classified as being in very grave condition. Sadly, it does not look good for JJ.
