Around 7pm last night, I decided to check the national sports websites. Two major NFL stories broke within about fifteen minutes of one another: Brett Favre’s retirement and Jim Johnson’s death. How did the big boys stack their headlines? Take a look.
First, NFL.com:

Favre, as expected, gets the majority of the page. But JJ is the top headline with a photo included. Not bad.

Next up is CBSSportsline.com:

The top headline is Johnson, followed by Favre, then Plaxico. A death should always trump a retirement and a grand jury. CBS got it right.

Lastly, is ESPN.com:

Like NFL.com, Favre receives most of the page, but also gets the top headline on the right. Forgive me if you have to squint, but notice what’s second? The Plaxico grand jury story. Finally, positioned in third, is Jim Johnson.
Listen, I realize it’s easy to pile on the World Wide Leader. After all, they are a pretty large target. But it’s evidence like this that gives them such an awful reputation. Using their logic, Favre retiring and Plaxico’s trial are of greater importance than a highly respected NFL defensive coordinator dying of cancer. I have one word for ESPN: Disgusting.
