The Return of Brian Westbrook

I’m attempting to steer the conversation back toward actual football. If you still want to vent about the new guy in town, I understand. However, at some point, those of us who haven’t abandoned our loyalty to the entire team need to move on with the impending season. So, that’s what I’m doing today.

Here’s what’s happening with the Eagles:

- Westbrook returned to practice on a limited basis this afternoon. He was limited but reports are he looked very good.

- Abiamiri, Laws and Schobel were back as well.

- Oh yeah, #7 was out there too.

- Brent Celek and Trent Cole both have AC shoulder sprains. They are listed as day-to-day.

- Jason Peters is still having problems with his quad. This is becoming a recurring issue, which isn’t good. Giving up a couple sack versus the Patriots didn’t help his cause. He needs to get it together.

- Shawn is still MIA. He lashed out at the media who think he’s a “nutcase” and questioned his manhood. He said, “He’s alright with Shawn Andrews.” I love the third person. Listen, I’m pulling for the dude, but chronic back problems don’t just disappear overnight.

- Bryan Smith suffered a concussion on Thursday. Not sure when he’ll be back.

- Stew and Ingram both had their ACLs operated on by Dr. James Andrews.

- Let’s relax a bit before we anoint Eldra Buckley the next great thing. Tony Hunt had a huge preseason game last summer. Look where he is now.

- Shady is obviously a baller. In an otherwise typically messy opening exhibition game, McCoy stood out as a player to watch.

- JMac had a good/bad game. He displayed his speed and shiftiness, but also muffed a punt.

- I don’t panic after one preseason contest. That being said, the defense was awful covering the Pats’ tight ends.

- Did you see that sweet grab by Jason Avant? The guy catches everything.

- Sav Rocca doesn’t impress me. Too inconsistent. I wish they didn’t dump Ken Parrish so soon.

- Byron Parker was released to make room for the new addition.

- Sheldon Brown suffered bruised ribs after an end zone collision with Kevin Curtis.

Time for a shameless plug. The fine fellows over at Bleed Green interviewed me for their site. Check it out if you get the chance. I give a prediction on the upcoming season.

scott, need your help. i have a fantasy draft coming up this weekend. i draft in the 9 spot and i will take brady with my first pick. (WE GIVE 6 PNTS FOR TD PASSES). i can get westbrook in the second round on the way back up? is he worth that pick in the second as my #1 back? i saw the game against the pats, and mccoy looked super. is westbrook going to be the same or close to the impact player to the eagles this year, or is mccoy slowly taking over???? got a delemma here.....not sure where to go on this one?

dave - Westbrook should be ready to go in September, but I would avoid him in drafts. McCoy is too talented to stay off the field. I still think Westy will produce good numbers, but not as a true #1 stud back. That's my take. However, if you do take him, you HAVE to get McCoy as a handcuff.

Ian - You're right. After watching the replay I saw it was Cole's fault. Obviously, Peters isn't 100% with his quad problem.

Peters didn't play well, but to be fair he only gave up one sack. The announcers incorrectly blamed him for a sack that was Nick Cole's fault.

I like the fact that Rocca comes from Aussie rules football. Those guys are serious.

Give me a punter that is capable of putting the occasional big hit on and I am happy.

I would keep him in hopes that he gets a tad more consistent.
