Another Game That Doesn't Count

Maybe it’s due to all the news surrounding the Eagles in recent weeks, but this exhibition season is really dragging. I need for it to be over. My interest level in fake games is minimal.

I suppose I could do what every other blogger and media scribe will do today and post about what to look for tonight or questions that need to be answered or position battles to watch or how Vick will be used, but you guys and gals already know that stuff. Right?

I could also pontificate about signing T.J. Duckett or the trade rumors swirling around Reggie Brown, but neither of those speculative stories matter to me. I mean if Duckett can’t make the Seahawks roster, why the hell would the Birds want the dude? As for Reggie… hasn’t he been on his way out of Philly for two years?

I could delve into the mystery that is Kevin Curtis. Why does he seem to be on the decline? Is it the groin or the knee? Or is he simply fatigued from a long training camp? I guess I should be concerned, but I’m not. If Kev can’t go, it means more playing time for Maclin and Baskett, which I’d rather see anyway.

I could blather on about the cloudy picture at right tackle, but is there anything new on this subject? Just name Justice the starter. I wanna see the guy stare down Julius Peppers on September 13th. It’s the only way to judge if he can play or not.

I could worry about Darren Howard‘s nagging groin. What’s the point? He’s probably headed down the same path as L.J. Smith and Curtis. More surgery.

Then there are the safeties and linebackers. Who knows what’s going on there? I don’t even think Big Red and Little Red have answers.

I guess I’ll just flip on the game and hope nobody gets hurt. That’s pretty much what I do for every preseason contest. If the Eagles win 30-10, great. If they lose by the same score, not great. Either way, it doesn’t count. In two weeks nobody will care or remember.

Howard and Curtis are prime targets for the annual Surprise Cut. Both are probably on the downside of their careers, neither is healthy and both are caught in a numbers crunch. Curtis might get spared because Maclin clearly isn’t ready there is no obvious #2 WR. I’d hoped Reggie Brown would do that, but he’s Reggie Brown. Howard is unlikely to get double-digit sacks again and if Babin has another big game, well, Darren shouldn’t be buying any green bananas this week.
