Wednesday’s Missing Links
The Axe Man Cometh
What to make of the latest eye-opening roster move by the Eagles? Is it a sound football decision, a nostalgia for 2004, or an act of desperation by a brain trust who were recently given a painful reminder how porous the run defense can be without a beast like Stewart Bradley or Jeremiah Trotter manning the middle?
I’d say it’s a mixture of all three. Surely, Reid and Co. took a good hard look at Trot and were confident enough to believe he can offer at least a modicum of help. Are we to take Trotter’s word that he feels [...]
Oh, the Kevin Kolb haters will love this. According to Jeff McLane via his Twitter, Kolb will be named NFC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance last Sunday versus the Chiefs. He completed 24/34 for 327 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions. For good measure, he also added a one-yard scoring plunge.
Congrats to Kolb! He deserves the honor. He joins DeSean Jackson as another NFC weekly winner. Jackson won the Special Teams Player of the Week back in week one. Who’s next? I predict Trotter will win the defensive player award by week ten. Wink.

If there is a record for the number of times one player has rejoined the same team I think Jeremiah Trotter just broke it. For a third time in his on again, off again NFL career, Trotter is an Eagle. According to FOX sports Jay Glazer (via Twitter), the Eagles have signed the Axe Man to a one-year contract after visiting with him twice in the last week.
The four-time Pro Bowler was brought in to provide physicality and leadership on defense. Obviously Reid and Co. were none too pleased at the pounding delivered by the Saints two weeks ago. With [...]
Cheesesteak of the Week
It’s Tuesday, which means it’s time to dole out another yummy cheesesteak to a deserving Eagle. It was an impressive win for the Birds on Sunday. Plenty of guys put in solid efforts, but in my mind one name stood out from the pack. Where’s my drumroll? The Cheesesteak of the Week goes to:
Eagle Eye Observations: Week 3
Blowout victories are fun, aren’t they? The Eagles were never really threatened by the Chiefs yesterday. Several things caught the attention of the Eagle Eye. Let’s get to them:
I hate to begin with a downer, but what was the deal with the run blocking? Not good. Shady got stuffed on at least three short yardage runs. With the exception of a couple long runs, both the left and right sides were manhandled by the Chiefs 3-4 alignment. McCoy was to blame on a couple plays by not following his blockers, but there didn’t seem to be many holes opened up. [...]
The Eagles needed a win today and they got one. All the hullabaloo surrounding the debut of Michael Vick was pushed aside by Kevin Kolb, DeSean Jackson, Shady McCoy, Brent Celek and the return of the signature attacking defense that we have all come to love over the last ten years.
The offense wasted little time getting on the board versus the Chiefs. After a quick three and out, the next two drives both ended in rushing touchdowns: the first by Shady, the second by Kolb. On their third drive, Reid elected to go for it on fourth and one [...]
Michael Vick made his return after sitting out for over two years of NFL action today against the Chiefs. The Philly fans gave him a warm welcome, and Andy Reid got him out there immediately. Vick was used in the slot as a receiver, in the Wildcat and as the QB of a Full House set. Looks like he’s going to be a big part of the Eagles’ attack, even if it just is as a decoy/rusher. Check out Vick in actual regular season action, something many of us never thought would happen not too long ago.
To no one’s surprise, Brian Westbrook and Kevin Curtis are out today. Which means a pair of rooks will start in their place. The future is now for Maclin and Shady.
In addition, the Chiefs will be without stud pass catcher Dwayne Bowe. Point for the Eagles.
Obviously, no McNabb either. This game could be very interesting and not in a good way.

Eagles-Chiefs Prediction
No poetry or rap this week. Instead, I’ll go with a conventional, boring prediction. Games like this worry me. An 0-2 team on the road getting no love. Not to mention Reid’s 1-3 record in pre-bye week games over the last four years. Gulp. It would be grand if the Chiefs rolled over for the Eagles, but that ain’t gonna happen.
The Birds are beat up on offense, but I think the defense will play inspired ball after being embarrassed last week. Trent Cole and company will get after Matt Cassel early. Kolb will do enough through the air to keep [...]
Checking the Injury Report
Damn, the Eagles really need this week to end. Too bad they have a game on Sunday. Who will or won’t be available is still unknown, but that won’t stop me from speculating.
First, the Chiefs. Linebacker Derrick Johnson has declared himself out with a groin. I’m not sure if head coach Todd Haley agrees, but it looks like their best defender might not be able to go. In addition, wide receiver Dwayne Bowe is listed as questionable with a hamstring strain. It goes without saying that if either or both of them are out, it’s advantage Eagles.
Now to the Birds. [...]
Who Are the Kansas City Chiefs?
To be honest, I haven’t watched much of the Chiefs since Trent Green, Priest Holmes, Eddie Kennison and Dante Hall skipped town. Back in those days, they were an offensive juggernaut.
In 2009, they are a work in progress with new coach Todd Haley at the controls. I actually dig Haley. He seems like one of those fire and brimstone guys who doesn’t accept guff from anybody. Kinda the opposite of Wade Phillips, who doesn’t even hold himself accountable for missteps.
Of course, Haley is sitting where he is today because of the prolific offense he engineered in Arizona last [...]
