Eagles Cuts Are Coming
Bye, bye Chris Patrick. He was the first to go. The axe will fall on four others today. Have Stew and Ingram been officially placed on IR yet? If not, they will count as two. That leaves dos more. I’m thinking another offensive lineman and either Eckel or Mailei could go. Or possibly Charleston Hughes, who is hurt anyway.
This weekend a bunch more will follow. What about the obligatory “surprise” cut? Is there a preseason darling on par with last year’s Jerome McDougle? I nominate Eldra Buckley and Brandon Gibson. I hope and think Buckley edges out a useless Lorenzo Booker. However, a part of me still believes LoBo will stick based solely on Reid’s stubborn refusal to give up on one of his pet projects. Please let me be wrong.
The curious case of Kevin Curtis might prevent Gibson from making the team. I doubt seriously Reid would feel comfortable entering the season with a pair of rookies and a gimpy Curtis filling out his receiving corps. I have a funny feeling Gibson will be dumped and end up a starter elsewhere within two years. Please let me be wrong.
What about the muddy tight end picture? Do they keep three? The late signing of Tony Curtis feels like a last ditch effort to land a legit blocker. Then it comes down to Myers and Bright. Due to his pass catching skills, the nod will likely go to Myers. Unlike the wideout logjam, this seems to be a question of which guy is less of a liability. With that in mind, Schobel has to be gone.
It will get interesting in the next seven days. I’m sure there will be a couple of head scratching moves, but none worthy of inciting an early September riot. Have no fear. I’m sure there will be plenty of opportunities to burn and pillage this season. Like when Reid benches McNabb in favor of Vick. Just kidding, folks. Maybe.
There is still time to save $80 on CBS Fantasy Football Commissioner. Click here for details.

Schobel is Nosferatu. He cannot die. We’re better off just accepting his inevitable presence.
September 1st, 2009 at 2:48 pmIf Schobel makes this roster, I may have to bite the bullet and order a custom made #89 jersey. Sticking to a team despite being totally useless is deserving of me wearing his number proudly.
September 1st, 2009 at 4:23 pmcan we make a list of the top 10 most useless Eagles of all time ? let’s say they had to be on the team 3+ years
September 1st, 2009 at 4:59 pmGreat idea, Harry. I’d day three years sounds about right. Give me some names.
September 1st, 2009 at 6:20 pmwell you nailed Schobel…Booker has to be top 10. Without thinking to hard these names came to mind:
September 1st, 2009 at 8:55 pmrob Carpenter though only one year with the birds
TE jimmie johnson
Freddie solomon
Na Brown
Greg Jefferson
Barry Gardner
Mike Mamula ?
Brandon Gibson has grown on me tremendously. I really do want to see him make the team. If he has a nice game tomorrow I think he can.
September 2nd, 2009 at 3:35 amBarry Gardner. Now there’s a name I hoped to never hear again. He was beyond useless. Mamula, for all his problems, actually had a couple good years. He was a victim of bad scouting.
I’m beginning to think Reggie Brown is approaching useless status. He’s got a lot to prove if he makes this team.
September 2nd, 2009 at 4:21 amohh Reggie is there !! Please trade him already.
I Booooed Mamula on draft day, sorry, i wanted some guy named Warren Sapp
