Eagles Sign TE Alex Smith

According to FOX Sports NFL insider Jay Glazer via his Twitter, the Eagles have signed tight end Alex Smith today. Smith was recently released by the Patriots. He is known as a solid pass catcher, but only an average blocker.

To make room for Smith, Tony Curtis has been released. This is a bit puzzling. I thought Curtis was supposed to be a blocker. Why add another guy who can’t help in the run game? I guess Reid and Co. are confident Celek can get the job done.

If we're thinking trade, it won't be easy. Reggie Brown is the popular choice, but they would take a cap hit. Not to mention the market for Reg isn't very large.

I think they got an upgrade today but I feel the roster is still far from finalized. I'm so excited for Sunday but still extremely curious as to what this roster may look like when it's "finished."

I agree completely Freak. Someone is going to get traded, but I don't know if they will bring back Curtis at TE if a trade gets done. Probably would be smart though considering if Celek gets hurt, Alex Smith can't block worth a damn. Didn't they put TE Rob Myers on the practice squad? Maybe they are holding on to him for insurance???

If no team picks Curtis up, the Eagles could bring him back- once they make the appropriate roster moves.

I see this as the Eagles trying to hold onto some trade bait for awhile longer (wide receiver?). If and when they make a trade, they may have the opportunity to bring Curtis back.

I don't know. Just thinking out loud.

Wasn't it King that said the Eagles weren't interested in Smith? Nice speculation, poor reporting.

If they keep 7 receivers and just 2 tight ends I think we will see them try some sort of shotgun spread offense this year. They got a good slot guy in Avant and a Celek is primed for a breakout year. Maclin(eventually) and DeSean are the burners to stretch the D on the outside.

or perhaps they have no intention to ever run the ball
