Never a dull moment. Being an Eagles fan is tasking to say the least. Yesterday, three pieces of news had most of Eagles Nation alternating between head-scratching and eye-rolling.
1) Jon Runyan worked out in Philly
2) Shawn Andrews’ back flared up
3) Brian Westbrook showed up on the injury report
The first was only mildly surprising. The second wasn’t surprising at all. The third was expected, but still makes me cringe a bit.
Runyan – Will he or won’t he be brought back? Reports are he left for Bills country last night. Buffalo has their own O-line woes which trump even those plaguing the Birds.
Shawn – This guy is driving me effing nuts. I’ve been writing on these pages for months that the Big Kid is unreliable and thus far he’s done zilch to prove me wrong. We can count on him being unavailable for the majority, if not all, of this season.
Westy – At least it’s the knee, not the ankle. Wait, is one better than the other? The knee procedure was done months before the ankle, but it’s the knee that lands him on the injury report. Sigh. We can count on Brian being a regular guest on the weekly boo boo list.
It would be nice if there was a third thing we could hang our hats on: Jon Runyan starting every game at right tackle. Just like he did for 190 straight weeks. I think this is beyond wishful thinking. He’s 35 and coming off delicate microfracture surgery.
I’ll say this much. If Reid and Co. think the dude can still ball, they need to dispense with the pleasantries and sign him ASAP. Justice is still an unknown and once Shawn gets dumped on IR (it will happen) a quality backup/starter will be needed.
Remember when we all thought the idea of a revamped O-line was going to the greatest thing since flavored cell phones? Those were the days. I will look upon them fondly, for I fear the grand plan will never reach full fruition.
