Fear the Giants?

AUTHOR: Scott Tunstall | IN: Eagles, NFL | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

Two weeks ago I would have said the Giants were the team to beat in the NFC. Even though they had beat-up on nothing but the weak sisters of the NFL, they did so in such impressive fashion, I couldn’t help but view them as ready and willing to put behind last season’s disappointing finish.
Eli Manning was throwing strikes. The unheralded receiving corps was catching everything in sight. The defense was suffocating. They were dominating by playing their style of ball. The run game may have been behind the aerial attack, and the pass rush seemed slightly askew, but not [...]

The Return of McFunk

AUTHOR: Scott Tunstall | IN: Eagles, NFL, Random Thoughts | COMMENTS: 3 Comments

Donovan McNabb is up to his old tricks again. Balls in the dirt. Balls sailing high. Balls gone wild. We’ve all become accustomed to this sort of behavior. It’s pretty much a guarantee that Don will go through a rough patch during any given season.
It can come at any time. Be it early, halfway through or late, a McNabb funk is almost as certain as a 65/35 pass-run ratio and a crushing loss to an inferior opponent. It is part and parcel of being an Eagles loyalist.
Listening to Don during his weekly presser yesterday, it was clear than even he [...]

Eagles Add Running Back

AUTHOR: Scott Tunstall | IN: Eagles, NFL, News | COMMENTS: None Yet

With Brian Westbrook’s status (and head) unclear, the Eagles swiped running back P.J. Hill off the Saints practice squad and shipped Omar Gaither to IR.
Hill had himself a great career at Wisconsin. I doubt he has much of a future with the Birds, but you never know. This move says more about Westy’s availability than anything else. I would be surprised if he plays versus Big Blue. Needless to say, if he can’t go, an already tough matchup gets a whole lot tougher.

What If Westbrook…

AUTHOR: Scott Tunstall | IN: Eagles, NFL, Random Thoughts | COMMENTS: None Yet

Normally, I’m pretty even keel when it comes to NFL injuries. They are a part of the game and all that cliched crap. When Stew Bradley went down during training camp, I was perturbed, but that was the extent of my dismay.
I’m a realist when it comes to guys who make a living purposely colliding with one another. So when Shawn Andrews and Kevin Curtis go down it’s no big deal. If they come back, great. If they don’t, that’s what the draft and free agency are for.
All that being said, I’m beginning to feel bad for Brian Westbrook. Just [...]

Cheesesteak of the Week

AUTHOR: Scott Tunstall | IN: Eagles, Entertainment, NFL | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

No cheesesteak last week for obvious reasons. Not the case after last night’s win. It was hardly a thing of beauty, but a few guys stood out and played well. Too bad Brian Westbrook got his bell rung because he looked like he was on his way to having a cheesesteak kind of game. Oh well.
For the first time this season, I’ve pegged three players who shone brightly beneath the Monday night lights. And the winners are:

Eagles Dispose of Hapless Redskins

AUTHOR: Scott Tunstall | IN: Breaking News, Eagles, Gameday, NFL | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

It was another far from perfect win for the Eagles over an unbelievably bad football team. This week’s victim was the Redskins, who just can’t get out of their own way. The Skins were gracious enough to commit four turnovers on a night when the dysfunctional Birds offense did very little, except for two plays by DeSean Jackson.
Final score: Eagles 27, Redskins 17.
The defense played aggressive and harassed maligned quarterback Jason Campbell all night. To his credit, Campbell – like he always seems to do against Philly – hung in there and battled to the very end. When given [...]

Eagles-Redskins Prediction

AUTHOR: Scott Tunstall | IN: Eagles, Gameday, NFL | COMMENTS: None Yet

Due to last week’s calamity in Oakland, I have no idea what to expect from our beloved Eagles tonight. They could blow out the Skins, or do another face-plant on national television.
This Birds have mounting issues on both sides of the ball. Is McNabb in his annual funk? Can he hit a wide-open receiver even when he has time to set and throw? Can the offensive line stop playing like the cast of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and keep Don’s jersey clean? Is Brian Westbrook ready to reclaim his status as a legit playmaker?
What about the defense? Is [...]

Seeing Red Zone

AUTHOR: Scott Tunstall | IN: Eagles, NFL, Random Thoughts | COMMENTS: None Yet

Since the Eagles don’t take the field until tonight, I was able to enjoy the Red Zone Channel yesterday for the first time this season. It’s pure bliss for a football fanatic and fantasy enthusiast like myself. I was able to catch every single game and not just the touchdowns. They do an excellent job jumping to and fro to cover all the significant action. I only wish the games were closer. Nevertheless, I can’t wait until two weeks from now when the Birds play on Sunday night, so I can Red Zone it again.
Here are few observations from [...]

Kevin Curtis Has Knee Surgery

AUTHOR: Scott Tunstall | IN: Breaking News, Eagles, NFL | COMMENTS: None Yet

To no one’s surprise, Kevin Curtis had his problematic knee scoped. According to Andy Reid, he will be out for an undetermined amount of time. He could be back this season, but don’t count on it.
Even if Curtis does return, his role on the team has diminished with the emergence of Jeremy Maclin. I’ll say it again, I would be surprised if Curtis was an Eagle in 2010.

Asante Samuel Isn’t Fond Of Tackling

AUTHOR: Scott Tunstall | IN: Eagles, NFL | COMMENTS: 2 Comments

Have you read this little ditty over at Delaware Online by Geoff Mosher? To quickly summarize, $50 million-dollar man Asante Samuel said he wasn’t brought to the Eagles to tackle.
Technically, he’s kinda right. Cornerbacks who get lots of interceptions are rewarded with hefty contracts. The ones who are solid tacklers have to make do with what they can. Ask Sheldon Brown.
I guess Asante got a bit snippy about being asked repeatedly why he totally whiffed on Zach Miller’s long touchdown catch and run in last Sunday’s despicable loss to the Raiders. He could have saved himself a week’s worth of [...]
