According to PE.com, the Eagles have acquired Rams linebacker Will Witherspoon in exchange for wide receiver Brandon Gibson and a 5th round draft pick in 2010.
The Birds needed to do something to improve their beleaguered linebacker position. Witherspoon is in his 8th season out of Georgia and has posted 100+ tackles three times in his career. This season he has recorded 33 tackles and one forced fumble in six starts.
At 6’1″, 240 lbs., he brings decent size, although he’s not much bigger than Omar Gaither. He’s played OLB most of his career, so how he fits into the defense remains to be seen. He’s a natural WIL backer. Are they going to try him inside? We shall see.
Gibson may end up being a player, but he was never going to get any playing time, so his loss is minimal. Why not unload either Curtis or Brown? Because both are washed up and make too much money. No team wants average receivers with big salaries.
