Eagles Are Running Out Of Receivers

Remember all that wide receiver depth the Eagles had? Well, it’s officially gone. Hank Baskett and Brandon Gibson have been traded, Kevin Curtis‘s balky knee is moments away from exploding and Reggie Brown continues to be persona non grata in the offense.

That leaves DeSean, Maclin and Avant as the only healthy contributors. One more injury and this team is in serious trouble. Even more concerning is Avant’s lack of production through five games. Eleven catches is similar to last season, but I thought he would be more involved than what we’ve seen thus far. His last three games have gone from two grabs to one to none. That’s not good.

An offense that looked potent just two weeks ago is suddenly showing warts. Relying on rookie and second-year wideouts is fine and dandy when you’re playing garbage teams, but better defenses aren’t going to get beat by 50-yard bombs too often.

All this points to yet another reason why the running game needs to get it in gear. Starting with the line, which hasn’t generated much push the last few years games. Who cares if all these dudes are huge if they can’t or aren’t willing to smack defenders in the mouth.

The stupid guard rotation can’t be helping matters. I doubt Stacy Andrews is going to “improve his technique” by getting only 15 snaps a game. He says he’s healthy; he says he’s ready to play more. So what’s the problem? Is he really that bad, or is it something else? I know I’ve already covered this, but I really wish Reid would clear up this mystery.

Linebackers, receivers, lineman. The Birds depth is being stretched to the limit. It goes without saying that they can ill afford anymore bodies dropping.
