Asante Samuel Isn’t Fond Of Tackling

Have you read this little ditty over at Delaware Online by Geoff Mosher? To quickly summarize, $50 million-dollar man Asante Samuel said he wasn’t brought to the Eagles to tackle.

Technically, he’s kinda right. Cornerbacks who get lots of interceptions are rewarded with hefty contracts. The ones who are solid tacklers have to make do with what they can. Ask Sheldon Brown.

I guess Asante got a bit snippy about being asked repeatedly why he totally whiffed on Zach Miller’s long touchdown catch and run in last Sunday’s despicable loss to the Raiders. He could have saved himself a week’s worth of grief if he wrapped up Miller and brought him down, rather than pratfalling like the Iron Sheik.

I have a message for Asante: HEY ASSHOLE! YOU ARE A FOOTBALL PLAYER WHO PLAYS ON THE DEFENSIVE SIDE OF THE BALL. NOT ONLY DO YOU GET PAID TO TACKLE, YOU ARE EXPECTED TO KNOW HOW TO DO IT!!!

This just in. Brian Westbrook isn’t paid to pickup a blitz. DeSean Jackson isn’t paid to block downfield. Trent Cole isn’t paid to play the run. Sav Rocca isn’t paid to hold for field goals.

Nothing pisses me off more than when millionaire athletes make ridiculous excuses for not doing their jobs. Just say you blew the play and it won’t happen again. Even if it’s just lip service, I’ll feel satisfied that you realize you effed up and will make an effort not repeat the same mistake.

did you read the article or just the headline. Asante said he didn't get signed for his tackling ability. it was almost a knock on himself but it was completely true. he wasn't signed for his tackling ability. He said that he works on his tackling every day. At no point did he proclaim that tackling is not his job, which is obviously different than your column suggests
