Since nobody seems to be stressing the notion that Chris Gocong likely won’t play on Sunday against the Cowboys, allow me to be the worrywart.
Gocong will never get the pub that Trent Cole or Asante Samuel does, but that doesn’t make him any less important to the defense. Before Will Witherspoon arrived, Gocong was the only Birds backer playing all three downs. Akeem was losing snaps to Tracy White and the MIKE position was a revolving door.
The thing that makes Gocong valuable is his brain. He doesn’t make mental mistakes and is rarely out of position. Sure he may be a step behind a tight end at times, or overrun a play now and again, but more often than not, he’s making or assisting on big stops.
I’m not too jazzed at the prospect of penalty waiting to happen Moise Fokou manning the SAM on Sunday night. The dude is tenacious to a fault. His aggressive downhill style is fun to watch. However, he will be a major liability if he’s not careful. A foolish roughing or pass interference infraction at a critical point in the game could prove disastrous.
I hope Fokou can do the job. I just don’t think we should take for granted that he’ll be fine if Gocong can’t suit up.
