Eagle Eye Observations: Week 13

I love blowouts, but they have a tendency to mask lingering problems, and the Eagles still have some of those. That being said, it feels great to crush a team 34-7. Here’s another look from the Eagle Eye.

  • 4/11 on third downs? Terrible. 3/6 in the red zone? More terrible. And yet, they still racked 27 offensive points. I’m still waiting for the other shoe to drop.
  • 8 penalties for 62 yards. I think I counted four 15 yarders. Again, same old Birds.
  • 26 rushes for 103 yards. I’ll take that every week.
  • Poor outing for Shady. Nine touches for 26 yards. It was apparent Reid and Co. felt the best way to attack a smallish and fast defense was with power from Weaver and Buckley. Well, it worked.

  • Tony Gonzalez caught 8 for 72, but was contained in the first half. Despite an illegal contact penalty, I thought Macho did a nice job when matched up on Tony. Very physical. Maybe McDermott has found an answer to covering tight ends. Probably not, but a guy can hope.
  • Missing in Action file #90. Darren Howard, who has been quiet for weeks, batted down three Redman passes and was active most of the game. It would be nice to see him make some noise down the stretch. Poor Trent Cole is a one-man band most games.
  • I’m getting a little worried about Jason Peters. This is the third time he’s been hurt in a game. Perhaps I’ve been spoiled from years of Tra and Runyan, but Peters seems to go down a tad too easy.
  • That 12 play, 80-yard drive to start the third quarter was a thing of beauty. Me like. Me want to see more of these.
  • Missing in Action file #86. He dropped a key red zone pass on third down, but redeemed himself with two catches for 64 yards. The second grab made Vick look good, because that duck should have been picked.
  • Who else is not surprised one iota that Akers shanked the first kick after tying his own record for 17 straight made attempts? No one? That’s what I thought. At any rate, Dave is having a Pro Bowl season.
  • Was that Asante Samuel laying lumber in the Georgia Dome? I think it was. Although, Roddy White did juke him a couple times. To be fair, Roddy White is pretty damn good.
  • Quintin Demps is beginning to personify the stupidity of this team. Two unnecessary roughness penalties will get your ass benched for good, if not worse. However, one of those infractions was complete BS. In fact, the officiating crew as a whole was garbage. I guess Sean Jones is supposed to just stop in midair rather than hit the tight end. Unbelievable.
  • I’m still puzzled why the Falcons thought they could run up the gut on the Birds front four. Have they not seen what Bunk and Patterson have been doing for the last two years?
  • I could watch Leonard Weaver’s one-handed grab of a McNabb bullet all day. Not awarding him a long-term deal would be beyond idiotic. Not only can he ball, but he’s a quality dude.
  • More Tracy White. He seems to make plays every game. Not flashy, but gets the job done.

Three wins in a row. It’s the time of the year when Reid’s Eagles kick it in gear. Can’t afford a letdown with a trip to the Meadowlands on Sunday night. The Giants saved their season yesterday and I anticipate they will be itching for payback after dropping the last three to the Birds. It’s setting up to be another classic NFC East slugfest in December. I can’t wait.

After perusing the list of NFC fullbacks, I would say Weaver is a lock to make the Pro Bowl. His TDs will be the difference.
