Is DeSean Jackson MVP Material?

On the heels of his latest electrifying performance, coupled with a fourth NFC Player of the Week/Month honor, I’m of a notion that DeSean Jackson is worthy of MVP consideration.

Now, before you accuse me of being a homer, I want to clarify my statement. I don’t believe he will win the MVP award and I won’t bitch and moan if he doesn’t get a vote. I’m just putting the question out there.

Let’s take a looksee at his resume (stats from NFL.com):

  • He’s ranked 13th among all receivers with 50 catches for 947 yards and seven touchdowns.
  • His 18.9 yards per catch leads the NFL with those who have at least 30 receptions.
  • He’s tied for 9th in total touchdowns with ten. That’s only four less than league leaders MJD and AP.
  • He is one of three players to score receiving, rushing and return touchdowns.
  • He leads the league in punt return average at 17.8 yards. He has also scored twice on returns. Patrick Crayton is the only other player with more than one return touchdown.
  • His eight touchdowns of 50-plus yards not only leads the league, but it ties an NFL record for most in a season.
  • He has won two NFC Special Teams Player of the Week awards, an NFC Offensive Player of the Week and the NFC Special Teams Player of the Month for September.

You could argue he single-handedly defeated the Redskins in week 7 and the Giants this past Sunday night. Take away his four touchdowns in those two games and the Eagles assuredly lose. Take away those two wins and the Birds are 7-6 and in trouble to make the playoffs.

Oh, and he missed a game with a concussion and still has three more to play. In previous years when dynamic return men like Dante Hall and Devin Hester were included in the MVP discussion, I scoffed. That’s because neither of them contributed anything as a receiver. DeSean, obviously, is in a completely different class as a player and playmaker.

Guys like Brees, Manning, Chris Johnson and old man Favre are the leading candidates. I would be shocked if one of them doesn’t take home the prize. However, if I were to add a fifth gent to the list, it would be #10.

What does Eagles Nation think? Is DJax MVP material?

how does that make any sense? drew brees deserves the award more because it is more surprising how well he is doing? that's like saying that they should give an academy award to say ben affleck instead of johnny depp, even though depp was better, only because we expect depp to be good in all his movies. the award should go to the player who means the most to their team regardless of how high their expectations are.

So, you're comparing Drew Brees to Ben Affleck? Ridiculous. Brees has been a great QB for the last five years. The Saints have been a joke franchise for thirty years. Now they're legit, thanks to Brees. If that doesn't make him an MVP, I dunno what does.

i would say that the colts would be just as average without peyton manning as the saints would be without brees. at least the saints have a formidable run game. even with a lesser qb, they could make the playoffs on their rushing merits alone. as far as receivers, the colts do have an advantage but not by a lot. colton is pretty damn good. i never thought shockey was that good but most people don't agree with me

I would say Brees is more worthy only because it's a given how much Peyton means to the Colts. That's not to take anything away from him, but you could probably hand him the MVP every year since he's so consistently dominant.

What the Saints are doing is much more surprising than the Colts. Before the season, I doubt anyone would have believed New Orleans would be 13-0. Obviously, their defense has something to do with it, but if you're gonna give the award to another QB, I say Brees is the man.

I take the article for what it's worth. Is DeSean going to win MVP? Most assuredly not. That said, by the accepted definition of the award, DeSean is worthy of being in the conversation. He is certainly the MVP of the Eagles. Scott's points about DeSean's impact on certain Eagles games is right on point.

I think those that have a problem with the premise not only can't spell, but have difficulty with reading comprehension as well.

As an aside, I am a teacher who is willing to tutor those less fortunate than most of us, cognitively speaking. ;)

daboy: intentional ID10CY or not, the entire rest of that sentence did you no favors.

With that out of the way... I like DJax, and think he's by far the star player of the current Eagles team. He's been incredibly important to the success of the Philadelphia offense, and has been a game-changer more often than not.

That said, it can hardly be argued that he's more valuable to the Eagles than Drew Brees is to NO or Peyton Manning is to the Colts. Brees and Manning make the players around them look that much better.

I would make a strong argument for Brees as MVP, as he has a good-but-not-great group of receivers, and he makes them look legendary. Week to week, he doesn't hone in on just one receiver. He spreads the ball around. One week, it's Meachem. Another, it's Henderson. Marques Colston another week. Jeremy Shockey gets his looks. All of this happens because of the talent at the QB position. If you take away Drew Brees, the Saints are somewhere in the middle of the pack. With Drew Brees, the Saints are a title contender.

Matt - Appreciate a well thought out argument without the grade school name calling. You're absolutely correct about Brees. If he doesn't win it, then he's getting screwed, especially if the Saints go undefeated. The safe pick is Peyton, the sentimental pick is Favre and the gutsy pick would be Chris Johnson.

you boys are really smart? I guess you did not notice the Zero either. Its id 10 (the number) t. It would take a beagles fan to think that I misspelled the word by accident. Get a clue.

While I also laugh at Daboy's grammar problems, I think I have to agree with him.

Scott Tunstall, you're an idiot.

Jake, you're an idiot.

Daboy, your grammar needs work.

Thanks, JZ. I got the exact reaction I expected.

daboy, still need to work on those contractions. Might I suggest a special ed class at your local community college. Oh, and that "10" was very clever. Too bad the O and 0 look similar or I would have noticed.

desean will deffinitly not win MVP i doubt he will even be in contention as bula said earlier he is not a qb or rb...he is putting up incredible number i think he should absolutely be on the all pro team

When calling someone an "idiot," you might want to be grammatically correct, lest you look like one yourself. What you wanted to write was "you're an IDIOT." You're is a contraction for you are and IDIOT is spelled with an "I" not a 1.

Ha, that mom's basement gag gets funnier every time I hear it. You must be an unemployed newspaper scribe living in the year 2006. Next thing you'll be hitting me with Polack jokes.

You stay classy, daboy (great name by the way) ;)

Your an ID10T! There is NO WAY that he will or Win or even should be considered! Now go back to your moms basement.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He certainly deserves to be in the mix, though I can't say that he's more valuable this season to the birds than Chris Johnson is to the Titans, or Brees to the Saints.

Though I think we should look at it as a blessing in disguise. Do we really need Djax, the MVP, gracing the locker room or practice field? Love the guy, but he's got a tendency to love himself to no end.

there is no way that desean wins an mvp because he is not a quarterback. if he was a running back, he might have a shot, but a receiver/returner for mvp? what are you going to suggest next? that a defensive player will win the heisman?

Sorry, the powers that be already declared that its Peyton/Brees if their team is undefeated or Brett Favre.
Whether right or not, thats what its gonna be.
