Letdown Looming?
A good number of Eagles fans seem to think this Sunday’s clash with the Niners is a prime spot for one of those dreaded letdown games. Four physically and emotionally exhausting wins in a row can sometimes deflate a team the next time they take the field.
Hopefully, that won’t be the case for the Birds, but as we all know, they have a tendency to flop just about the time everyone starts singing their praises. Last year’s week 16 clunker versus the ‘Skins springs to mind as a recent example, as does the debacle in Oakland back in October. I’d just as soon forget the latter ever occurred, but it served as a painful reminder that Reid’s Iggles can lose anywhere, anytime.
For what it’s worth, I feel fairly confident this team will come ready to ball on Sunday. I feel this way for a couple reasons: 1) They can clinch a playoff berth with a win and 2) the 49ers are traveling East on a short week.
Securing a postseason spot with two games to go would be huge. With those kinds of stakes, you gotta believe they will be pumped to kick some ass. Of course, this is a young team, so nerves could play a factor. What we don’t need to see are a bevy of mental collapses, especially early on. That’s the exact thing the Niners took advantage of in disposing of the Cardinals on Monday night.
Trips to the right coast can be tricky for left coast squads. The Niners are 1-5 on the road, but have taken the Colts, Vikings and Packers to the wire. I’d like to see them sleepy at the 1pm kickoff, because they have enough talent on both sides of the ball to give the Birds fits.
A letdown wouldn’t shock me, but it would come as a surprise considering what’s on the line.
