DeSean Jackson Hits the Battlefield

AUTHOR: Scott Tunstall | IN: Eagles, Entertainment, Offseason, Video | COMMENTS: None Yet

NFL players today love their video games. So much so that they are entering themselves in tournaments across the land. The Eagles own DeSean Jackson was in L.A. last week to participate in the Battlefield Bracket Challenge Presented by GameStop.
He, along with other athletes and celebs such as Chad Ochocinco and the lovely Stacy Keibler, went head-to-head playing Battlefield: Bad Company 2, which I presume has something to do with shooting bad guys with guns.
You can go to GameStop.com/BattlefieldBC2 to vote for DJax and also enter for a chance to win some nice swag, including $10,000 in cold, hard cash. [...]

The ‘Kearse’ at Left Defensive End

AUTHOR: Scott Tunstall | IN: Eagles, Free Agency, NFL, Offseason | COMMENTS: 5 Comments

With the announcement that the Panthers will not franchise tag Julius Peppers, look for the rumors linking him to the Eagles to heat up. Even at 30, expect Peppers to get a handsome payday from whichever team offers him a contract. I just hope that team isn’t our beloved Birds.
I wanted Peppers last season, but not so much now. For some reason, I have a feeling he will turn into another Jevon Kearse should he join the midnight green. Back in 2004, the Birds made Kearse, who was 28 at the time, the highest paid defensive lineman in the league [...]

The Play That Defined Brian Westbrook

AUTHOR: Scott Tunstall | IN: Eagles, NFL, Offseason, Video | COMMENTS: 2 Comments

Brian Westbrook was many things during his days as an Eagle: explosive runner, dynamic receiver, one-man highlight reel, go-to weapon and team leader are just a few of the hats that he willingly wore.
He was one of the most professional and dedicated players I’ve ever seen. Even during his contract squabbles, he remained classy and didn’t resort to lowbrow tactics.
You hear terms like “team player” thrown around a lot, but those two words best describe Westbrook. He always did what was asked of him even when he didn’t agree. It’s not ideal being the main runner in an offense that [...]

BREAKING: Brian Westbrook Released

AUTHOR: Scott Tunstall | IN: Breaking News, Eagles, NFL | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

Well, it happened. The Eagles have cut ties with Brian Westbrook. I’m somewhat surprised by the timing, but evidently the sooner the better. If Westy wants to continue his playing career, he’ll now have the opportunity to catch on elsewhere. Here’s what Andy Reid had to say about Westbrook:
“Brian is one of the greatest Eagles of all time and he is even a better person and leader,” said head coach Andy Reid. “In my mind, there has not been a more versatile running back that the NFL has seen. I had a conversation with Brian this morning to let him [...]

Trimming the Fat

AUTHOR: Scott Tunstall | IN: Eagles, Free Agency, NFL, Offseason | COMMENTS: 2 Comments

Remember when many of us were left scratching our heads last offseason when the Eagles refused to cut Reggie Brown, even though it was clear he had fallen out of favor with Andy Reid? Some fans got pretty angry, and I couldn’t really blame them. Why keep a guy who wasn’t even activated for most games? In a word: money.

Eyeing the Unrestricted

AUTHOR: Scott Tunstall | IN: Eagles, Free Agency, NFL, Offseason | COMMENTS: None Yet

I’ve been perusing the 2010 list of UFA for the last couple days. All 235 of them. To be honest, I’m not finding it very impressive. There are a few big/obvious names like Julius Peppers and Karlos Dansby, and a few familiar faces to Eagles Nation. (Remember Matt Ware and Bobbie Williams?)
Guys like DT Justin Bannan and DE Jarvis Green are mildy interesting. Each would provide solid veteran depth, but neither deserves a big contract.
Scott Fujita has the size (6-5 250) to play SAM. At this point, Moise Fokou is first on the depth chart. Jermaine Phillips is a starting [...]

This Whole Stacy Andrews Thing Could Get Messy

AUTHOR: Scott Tunstall | IN: Eagles, NFL, News, Offseason | COMMENTS: None Yet

The Eagles and potential free agent bust Stacy Andrews might be on their way to an impasse. Pay him his $4.1 million roster bonus due in April, or tell him he’s not worth it and demand he stop stealing cash. Or they could give him his bonus, but only on the condition he rework his current deal.
Damn these Andrews bros. have become a major headache. Normally guys get bonuses for actually contributing something on the field. Stacy did next to nothing while still recovery from knee surgery last season. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt, but he didn’t [...]

About Those Kevin Kolb Rumors

AUTHOR: Scott Tunstall | IN: Eagles, NFL, News, Offseason | COMMENTS: 4 Comments

When I first read the “report” regarding the so-called contract talks that were supposedly going on between the Eagles and quarterback Kevin Kolb, I said to myself, “Man, this would be a major story if Adam Schefter had written it.”
Alas, Adam didn’t pen it. Nor did Chris Mortensen or Jay Glazer. Nah, it was one of those pesky blogger types. Ya know, those fellas who like to speculate and sometimes feed erroneous information to readers and in turn start a miniature widespread panic across the Interwebs.
Here’s what Kolb had to say about the situation on WIP with Howie and Ike:
“We [...]

Safety Talk

AUTHOR: Scott Tunstall | IN: Draft, Eagles, NFL, Random Thoughts | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

There seems to be a debate brewing as to whether or not the Eagles need help at the safety position. Some feel Macho Harris will improve and settle into the starting free safety spot in 2010. Others think he might be better suited to slide back to cornerback, where he excelled at in college. A select few believe he’s nothing more than a quality reserve, but not first-string material.

Special Teams Not-So Special

AUTHOR: Scott Tunstall | IN: Eagles, NFL, Offseason | COMMENTS: 2 Comments

Not that we didn’t already know this, but according to Rick Gosselin’s season-ending rankings, the Eagles special teams unit finished in the bottom half of the league — 17th to be exact. Actually, I thought they’d be worse, but DeSean and Akers prevented them from being completely atrocious.
So, where did Bobby April’s Bills finish? Try third overall. That was a drop for April, who had the number one ranked ST units twice during his tenure in Buffalo. Easy to see why he was brought aboard and Ted Daisher got shown the door.
With April’s experience and some good core players already [...]

Trade Winds

AUTHOR: Scott Tunstall | IN: Eagles, NFL, Offseason, Random Thoughts | COMMENTS: None Yet

‘Tis the season to talk about a little wheelin’ and’ dealin’. NFL Network and National Football Post scribe Michael Lombardi has conjured up one scenario that involves a certain Eagles signal caller. No, not that one, the other one. Kevin Kolb. Lombardi envisions a possible deal with the Browns:
