A couple guys jumped out at the Scouting Combine yesterday. One was defensive end Jerry Hughes from TCU. His first step is impressive and he’s known to bring heat off the edge. He’s undersized at 6’2″ 255, which has caused some pundits project him as an OLB in a 3-4 scheme.
I think Hughes can play with his hand in the dirt and has the frame to add weight. He reminds me of another smallish end coming out of college: Trent Cole. Hughes tore up the Mountain West Conference the last two seasons with 36.5 tackles for loss and 26.5 sacks. He has a non-stop, tenacious demeanor that could translate well to the pro game.
We all know the Eagles brain trust loves drafting pass rushers and prefer speed over bulk. Hughes is a solid tackler who brings energy and toughness to the position. Although raw, he’d be an interesting addition in the second or third round come April.
