Eagles Dump More Old Guys

Geesh. I can’t keep up with all the action going on over at NovaCare these days. I leave the house for a few hours only to return and learn the Eagles have parted ways with Kevin Curtis and Darren Howard.

Both moves make perfect sense. At 33, Howard was on his way out. He started the ’09 season fast but became invisible by the end. There was just too much wear and tear on his body to be a factor. Toss in the trade and extension for Darryl Tapp and the writing was on the wall.

As for Curtis, well, it’s not very surprising. After blowing up in 2007 with a 1000 yard season, he battled groin and knee injuries the last two years which limited him to only nine starts. With a trio of young studs at wideout, Curtis became expendable.

I love what the Birds are doing right now. Rather than overspend for sub-par free agents, they are dumping salary. It’s a good strategy to employ during an uncapped year. Clear the books and prepare for a new CBA, should one be agreed upon before 2011.

Let’s be honest. How much production were we expecting from guys like Westy, Shawn, Spoon and the rest? I say not much. This team is getting younger by the day, and with the draft about a month away, they are positioning themselves to add even more youth. It really is amazing how the brain trust team has completely overhauled the roster without suffering through a disastrous season or two.

Bye, bye to the latest castoffs. Who will be next to go? Stay tuned.
