You know it’s a quiet offseason in the world of the Philadelphia Eagles when the current discussion is the balance of power between head coach Andy Reid and team president Joe Banner. An article by Ashley Fox and Mike Jensen in the Philadelphia Inquirer suggests that the two do not get along as well as they claim and that Banner has all of the power.
While this assertion may or may not be accurate, there is very little evidence in the article to back it up. It appears the initial comment that sparked the article was by former Eagles cornerback Sheldon Brown on the contract negotiation process. You can read the quote in its entirety in the article in the Philadelphia Inquirer, but Brown essentially says the Eagles run like any other team in the NFL. The longtime Eagle suggested that Reid makes personnel decisions and Banner allocates the cap space those players can get.
And that’s about all there is to the story, which is now being discussed ad nauseum. The article cites unnamed sources at least half a dozen times, while those who spoke on the record had nothing negative to say.
At the end of the day, all that really matters is that Banner and Reid are happy with the situation and successful as an organization. Neither has said they are disgruntled, and the internal workings of the organization seem smooth from the outside. When it comes to winning, the two have obviously fallen short of that elusive Super Bowl title, but is their relationship to blame?
When you dissect the Eagles inability to win a Super Bowl during the Donovan McNabb era, there are many ways to divide the blame. Numerous mistakes were made by coaches and players alike, and you could argue that personnel decisions could have had an impact as well. But there has never been an indication that Reid and Banner were in disagreement on a major decision, so there’s no reason to be making much ado about nothing.
