Two of the top three Eagles linebackers were different in this morning’s practice due to a combination of injury and trial and error. Starting middle linebacker Stewart Bradley missed practice with hamstring spasms and is day-to-day.
Eagles defensive coordinator Sean McDermott said he wasn’t worried about the injury, “No, not at all. I go off of what Rick is telling me. Rick feels good about it, Stew feels good about it and so does Coach. We look to have him back very soon here.”
In Stewart’s place is Omar Gaither, the top backup at all three linebacker spots. McDermott trusts Gaither anytime he’s called upon, “I put a lot on Omar’s shoulders. He’s played all three linebacker positions, he’s done a great job. A few years ago, he was our most productive player on defense. He’s a good leader for us and a good quarterback of the defense when he’s in there.”
The other change to the top trio was a promotion for Akeem Jordan to the top weakside linebacker spot, previously held by Moise Fokou. McDermott says it’s not necessarily a permanent change, that the coaches are just rotating different guys into the spot. “We’re just trying to find the best combination of the first three. Akeem’s a good football player, he’s been productive for us over the years, so that’s why he’s in there.”
McDermott was also quick to point out that Fokou is still playing well and this shouldn’t say anything about his performance. “Absolutely not, absolutely not. Moises still has a lot of good football in front of him. You’re talking about a very young football player in the NFL right now. He’s done some good things, he’s very physical and his best football is ahead of him.”
Welcome Back White
The Eagles re-signed Tracy White to a one year contract. The linebacker spent last season as a special teams contributor for the Birds. White said he feels that being brought back in proves that the Eagles knew he could play, “I played pretty well you know, hopefully, I guess they saw that because I guess they probably had me as one of the top guys on their list to bring back. So I’m excited, I’m happy to be here.”
Mallett Makes Quick Return
The Eagles re-called running back Martell Mallett from waivers and released fullback Dwayne Wright after this morning’s practice.
