The Eagles handling of Michael Vick’s contract situation has been impacted by the uncertainty surrounding the expiring Collective Bargaining Agreement, according to Philadelphia head coach Andy Reid, who said that he hasn’t spoken to Vick about a contract extension.
“There will be a time and place when that needs to be addressed and we’ll address it,” Reid said. “It’s a crazy deal with the Collective Bargaining Agreement and so on. We really haven’t done anything with anybody. It’s just a different year.
“It’s not because of Michael’s situation or his past. He’s making pretty good money this year. It’s not like he’s not making good money right now. It’s about the way the league is going right now and so it’s hard to make those types of plans for the future.”
After the Jump: Vick’s Contract Details, Including Bonuses
Vick is in the second year of a two-year contract and is earning $5.25 million, according to the initial report by NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora. Vick is also in line for bonuses that could reach up to $2.75 million. With six games remaining, Vick has played extensively in six games. According to La Canfora, if Vick participates in 33 percent of the total offensive snaps this year and 51 percent in at least nine individual games, he’s eligible for three bonuses:
For playing 51 percent of the snaps in nine games: $850,000
For playing 51 percent of the snaps in 11 games: $1.05 million
For playing 51 percent of the snaps in 13 games: $850,000
It appears the third bonus is out of reach, but Vick will reach the first two as long as he stays healthy the rest of the season, bumping his 2010 earnings up to $7.15 million. Vick would pass the first bonus milestone after December 12′s game in Dallas and he’d reach the second bonus on December 26 after the Eagles host the Vikings.
At any rate, Vick is in the last year of his deal and all indications are that the Eagles want to extend him, but will place the franchise tag on him if necessary. The once and again superstar said he’s not worried about that right now.
“I can’t even answer that question, because a lot of details have to be worked out, and we’re not even talking about contracts or extensions or franchising right now,” Vick said. “We’re talking about football.”
